SVCC Hosts 8th Annual Law Enforcement Awards Banquet

Southside Virginia Community College hosted the 8th Annual Law Enforcement Awards Banquet on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the John J. Cavan Workforce Development Center in Alberta.  Area law enforcement agencies were invited to attend and honor one of their own as the recipient of the Officer of the Year Award for 2014.  The event was hosted by Dr. Chad Patton, Dean of Instruction on the Christanna Campus.  Ms. Francine C. Ecker, Director of the Department of Criminal Justice Services was the keynote speaker.  Those recognized as the Officers of the Year for 2014 are (Front Row, L to R) Sgt. Harvey A. Hoyle, Sr. of the Chase City Police Department, Inv. D. L. "Rusty" Callahan of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, Det. Ella Turner of the Crewe Police Department, Special Award Recipient, Dr. James H. Taylor, III recent SVCC retiree and former Assistant Professor and Program Head of the Administration of Justice Department, Capt. Bernie R. Obituary-Freddie Williams

Freddie Williams, 75, of Skippers, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014. He was preceded in death his parents, Thomas and Rachel Williams; sister, Barbara D. Little and brother, Billy ‘Wimp” Williams. He is survived by his brother, The Reverend Kenneth Williams and wife, Shirley of Newsoms, Virginia, his twin brother, Eddie Williams and wife, JoAnn of Emporia, Virginia and his sister, Dottie Williams of Courtland, Virginia; three nephews and four nieces. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6at Forest Hill Baptist Church. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Forest Hill Baptist Church Maintenance Fund, c/o Debbie Moseley, 5246 Brink Rd, Emporia, Virginia 23847. Online condolences may be made at
