Yasir Al-Khalili, MD Joins VCU Health CMH

South Hill – VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill would like to welcome Neurologist Dr. Yasir Al-Kahalili to our family of health care providers.  Dr. Al-Kahalili specializes in Neuro Science.

Dr. Al-Kahalili earned his MD with honors for excellence in research from St. George’s University, School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology and Environmental Science from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology and Genetics from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Al-Kahalili received the Golden Apple Award in 2018 by Drexel University College of Medicine, making him nationally recognized for teaching in medicine. He completed his residency from the Drexel Neurosciences Institute at the Drexel University College of Medicine.

Dr. Al-Kahalili is joining Dr. Carlos A. Williams at VCU Health Commonwealth Neuro Specialists, located at 501 Lombardy Street in South Hill, VA. To schedule an appointment, call (434) 447-9033.

New SVCC Local Board Chair Welcomes New SVCC President

J. Wesley Shepherd (Left), newly selected Chair of the Southside Virginia Community College Local Board, welcomes Dr. Quentin Johnson,(Right) new president of the college, to his first board meeting on July 10, 2019.  Shepherd, Market Executive for Touchstone Bank, has served on the board since 2015 and represents Nottoway County.  Dr. Johnson began his duties on July 1, 2019 and is the sixth president in the history of SVCC.

David A. Grizzard, 85, of Emporia, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019. He was the son of the late Franklin and Winifred Grizzard and was also preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Lee Grizzard and a grandson, Brandon Punzalan.

Mr. Grizzard is survived by his former wife, Jean Grizzard; three daughters, Nancy G. Rose (Norman), Tracy G. Fox (Clarence) and Christy G. Punzalan; son, David Scott Grizzard (Amy); seven grandchildren, Christopher Rose (Jenn), Jonathan David Fox, Collin M. Fox, Ashley Nicole Punzalan, Taylor Marie Punzalan; Harrison David Grizzard and Emma Claire Grizzard; great-grandchildren, Penelope Clementine Rose, Eamon Sawyer Rose, Deklan and Quinn Cauthorne; longtime devoted friend Hazel Stallings, and sister-in-law, Lois S. Grizzard.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia. Interment will follow at High Hills Memorial Cemetery.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the love and care shown to David in his later days by the nurses and caregivers at the Eugene H. Bloom Retirement Center.
