Edward C. Velvin, Jr., 78, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021. He served his country as a member of the National Guard and retired from the Army Reserve and also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a longtime member of Greensville Volunteer Fire Department as well as Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was a longtime member of Adams Grove Baptist Church where he served in many capacities.

Mr. Velvin is survived by his wife, Sally G. Velvin; son Chris Velvin (Audrey); daughter, Carol Grizzard (Carl); six grandchildren, Brandon Grizzard (Samantha), David Grizzard (JoJo), Megan Wilson (Josh), Chris Velvin, Jr., Dawn Hibbard and Brooke Velvin; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Joyner, Mary Pinner; a brother, Bobby Velvin and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held graveside 11 a.m. Saturday, February 20 at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Adams Grove Baptist Church, 24407 Adams Grove Rd., Emporia, Virginia 23847.

Elton A. Short, Jr.

Elton A. Short, Jr. 93, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 7, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Lena M. Short in March of this year and also by a sister, Dorothy Mae Nicholson.

Mr. Short is survived by his son, David Short and wife, Kathy; grandchildren, Taylor Short and wife, Natalie, and Mallory McCall and husband, Uriah; great-grandson, Hassan McCall and a brother, Wayne Short and wife, Jean.

The family will receive friends 11 a.m. -1 p.m. Tuesday, June 12 at Monumental United Methodist Church where the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. A graveside committal service with military honors will follow at Emporia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Monumental United Methodist Church, 300 Southampton St.Emporia, Virginia 23847.

Robert Luther Saffelle Jr.

Robert Luther Saffelle, Jr., 86, of Burlington died on Sunday, July 23, 2017. Originally from Emporia, VA, he was the son of the late Dr. Robert Luther Saffelle and Virginia Vincent Saffelle. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Islin Saffelle; son Robert Nelson Saffelle and wife Constance Hall Saffelle of Richmond, VA and their children Elizabeth Hall Saffelle and Katherine Virginia Saffelle; and daughter Ginger Saffelle Elliott and husband John VanTuyl Elliott of Winston-Salem, NC and their children Ashley Elizabeth Elliott, Anna Virginia Elliott, John Robert Elliott and Mary Elizabeth Elliott.

He is also survived by his sister, Patsy Saffelle Ferguson, of Emporia, VA and predeceased by his sisters, Bette Saffelle Milam and Virginia (Ginger) Vincent Saffelle.

He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1955, where he was captain of the tennis team and a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps., stationed in Quantico, VA. He started his 35-year career with Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in Winston-Salem, NC, transferred to Salisbury, NC and then to Burlington where he served as City Executive for the Burlington and Alamance County offices. He was a 1974 graduate of the Executive Program of Professional Management Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After retiring from Wachovia in 1989, he served as Treasurer of Carolina Biological Supply Co. until 1994.

He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of Alamance County Hospital, the Burlington YMCA and the Burlington-Alamance County Merchants Association. He also served as President of the United Way-Burlington/Alamance County, the Cherokee Council-Boy Scouts of America and the Alamance Country Club. He received the Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year award and the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America, the highest volunteer award in scouting.

The family wishes to thank the many caregivers, including the private nurses and those from Home Instead Senior Care and Hospice/Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, for their heartfelt care and support. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Front Street United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. A private burial for the family will be held at Alamance Memorial Park prior to the service.

Obituary-Arthur Graham Elliott, Jr., “Artie”

Arthur Graham Elliott, Jr., “Artie”, 50, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Faye Mangum Elliott; son, Justin Adams and fiancée, Kathryn Sheffield; his mother, Hazel Powell Elliott; sister, Brenda Bowen; mother-in-law, Marguerite Mangum; sister-in-law, Gene Mangum; a number of nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Artie was a devoted employee of Owen Ford where he was Parts and Service Director and was co-owner with his wife of Paws and Purrs Pet Spa. A true humanitarian, he was an active community leader having served on the Jarratt Town Council, had been very active with JRA and EGRA and a member of Jarratt Volunteer Fire Department of which he served as chief for a number of years. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Saturday, January 31 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 1. Cleaton Edward Malone, Jr. of Jarratt passed peacefully on December 30, 2014 at the age of 67.He is survived by one daughter, Tara Lee Malone-Menendez; her husband Joe Menendez; one son,Christopher Edward Malone; his wife Susan and three grandchildren; Olivia Lee Menendez; Claire Elizabeth Malone andAnna Catherine Malone. All his friends new him as Ed and he was known by all as a kind person. Visitation will be held at Owens Funeral Home Thursday the 1st of January from 6pm to 8pm.Funeral services will be held January 2nd  at Main Street Baptist Church of Emporia at 11am and followed by a private graveside service.

Memorial Service for James “Jimmy” Millard Jones, Jr.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 in Purdy, Va. for James “Jimmy” Jones, Jr. The service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Church of the Resurrection (formally Grace Church) 9986 Purdy Road, Jarratt.  The Reverend Colin Cooper will officiate.    Jimmy Jr., age 43, passed away February 9, 2014 at his home in Cottondale, Florida. He was born on September 25, 1970 in Richmond, Va. but spent much of his life in Greensville County. Jimmy is survived by his mother Burnette Banks, his father James M. Jones, Sr. (Lisa), his loving wife April Jones; daughters, Brittany Jones, Abbey Jones, and stepdaughters ,Chelsea and Cheyenne Corbin, his brother Tommy Jones (Jennifer), sisters Michelle Jones Powell (Will), and Brynn Jones. Jimmy is the Grandson of the late Tom and Jeanette Jones of Purdy, Va. There will be a visitation and reception immediately following the service for the family to receive and visit with friends.

Obituary-David Hugh Justice, Jr.

David Hugh Justice, Jr., of Skippers, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014. He was the only son of the late David H. and Texie B. Justice. A local business owner and family man, he served as a sniper/sharpshooter in the U.S. Marine Corps, reaching the rank of Sergeant. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Jane Parker Justice, married 40 years; both parents; and a close childhood friend, Sonny Arrington. He is survived by a son, John Robert Justice and longtime girlfriend Tara Richmond of Rising Sun, MD; daughters, Susan Justice Parker and husband Alan Parker of Holyrood, KS; as well as Robin Ann Justice and husband Justin Michalicek of Chesterfield, VA; grandchildren Amber Troutman, Jonathan Justice, Jordan Justice, Jerry Doyle, AJ Parker,  and Ana Michalicek; sisters, Phyllis Lynch of FL, Carol Butler and husband Buck of FL, Dawn Smith of Amelia, VA, Gail Pennington of MD, and DeeLaine Elliott of Emporia, VA; honorary grandchildren Kate and Andrew Best; 5 great-grandchildren; 13 nieces and nephews; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
