Obituary-Doris Rawls Miller

Mrs. Doris Rawls Miller, age 86, died June 22, 2014.  She was born Sept. 21, 1927 in Southampton County. Mrs. Miller was a former Director of the Community Action Program in Danbury, Conn. , she was also  a long time member of Persons United Methodist Church.   Mrs.Miller was married January 13, 1946 to John Gaines Miller, III in Galena, Illinois. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles Person and Hattie Grizzard Rawls, 2-sons John Gaines Miller, IV and Charles Russell Miller, 1-daughter Sharon Leigh Miller and brother Charles Person Rawls, Jr.  She is survived by her husband John Gaines Miller, III, son Dwane Henry Miller and wife Dee B. Miller, brother Melvin Lee Rawls, sister Connie Temperance Rawls, Daughter-in-law Karen Fitzsimmons Miller, grandchildren ; Jennifer  O’Neill Howard and husband Sloan Howard  ,  Erica Trout and husband Joe Trout, Russell F. Miller, Laura M. Ross and husband Jason Ross, and Eleanor M. Robertson and husband Tim Robertson.; Great-grandchildren; Cierra Howard, Chayne Howard,  Nathan Trout, Natalie Trout, Gracyn Ross, Coral Ross, Gabriella (Bella) Robertson, and Burkley Robertson.

Visitation will be held 11:00 A. M. Wednesday , June 25,  at the Persons  United  Methodist  Church , 27642 Old Church Rd., Drewryville, Va. where funeral service will follow 12:00 P.M. Obituary-Margie Harp Ferguson

Emporia, Margie Harp Ferguson died Monday, June 09, 2014.  She was born in Roanoke Rapids, N. C., the daughter of the late Walter P. and Allie Parks Harp.  She was preceded in death by husband Henry Clayton Ferguson and brother Alfred Lee Harp.

She was a member of Forest  Hill Baptist Church.  She loved her Lord and Savior, family church family and everyone.  She dedicated her time to serving the Lord as an Adult Sunday School teacher, pianist, organist, music director and various other committees at Forest Hill Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son Michael W. Ferguson and wife Carolyn, daughter Debbie F. Moseley and husband Leslie.  Six grandchildren; Craig Ferguson, Clay Ferguson and wife Teresa, Chris Ferguson and wife Stephanie, Kirk Moseley and wife Erica, Kristen Moseley and eight great-grandchildren , Skylar, Tucker, Tyler, Tori, Haley, Joshua, Bailey and Ashlynn, all of Emporia.  One brother, Mason Harp and wife Helen of Roanoke Rapids, N. C., a nephew Timmy Harp, cousins and many friends.

The family will receive family and friends at Echols Funeral Home, Wednesday June 11th 6:00 P. M. till 8:30 P. M.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 12th at 2:00 P. Obituary-RANDY KIETRON POPE

RANDY KIETRON POPE better known as "Loki" departed this life on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia.

Randy was born to Juanita Pope and Randy Dobie on October 19, 1989 along with his twin brother; Shawn Pope. He received his education through Greensville County Public Schools Systems. Randy was a very talented young man and was viewed as a role model for many younger men in town.

Randy was raised with an abundance of respect for his elders through the guidance of his grandmother; Mrs. Emma Dean Smith.

Randy leaves to cherish his beloved memories a loving mother: Juanita Pope of Emporia, VA, his father; Randy Dobie of Maryland, his loving and devoted grandparents; Emma Dean and Ronnie Smith of Emporia, VA, a fiancé; Tiffany Woodruff, two sons; Elijah and Kietron Pope all of Emporia, VA, seven brothers; Shawn D. Pope, Leo Pope, Christopher Rodgers, Marcel Rodgers, Derek Pope, Author Maryland and Tyron Everett, one sister; Felicia Pope, one devoted aunt; Julia Pope and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Obituary-BENJAMIN FRANKLIN JEFFERSON

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN JEFFERSON was called to his heavenly home on Monday, June 2, 2014 at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, VA. He was born April 9, 1928 to the late Benjamin and Annie Taylor Jefferson in Greensville County, Virginia.

Benjamin accepted Christ at an early age and joined the St. Paul Church of God In Christ under the leadership of the late Elder R. N. Johnson, Sr. He later moved his membership to St. John Church of God In Christ in Jarratt, VA, where he became ordained as a deacon. Deacon Jefferson served faithfully as a Deacon and Trustee of the church until his health began to decline.

In 1957 Deacon Jefferson married Thelma Iola Harding of Pleasant Hill, NC and to this union one daughter was born; Sandra Faith Jefferson.

Benjamin was a hard worker and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He also worked at Georgia Pacific for over 20 years before retirement. After retirement Mr. Jefferson could be found working over the grounds of Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, sitting under the carport or often down at the late Deacon Billy Potts Church Supply Store. Deacon Jefferson also ran Chapel Hill Grocery, Halifax Grocery and worked at the Emporia Dye Plant.

Mr. Jefferson was preceded in death by his three sisters; Alma J. Morgan, Lelia J. Washington and Suretha J. Jones and one nephew; Alvin "Pee-Wee" Washington.

Left to cherish his loving memories a loving and devoted wife; Thelma H. Jefferson, one daughter Sandra F. Jefferson of the home and friend Gilbert P. Lucas, one grandson; Najah R. Travis of Ettrick, VA, one granddaughter; Adrienne G. Giles (Lamar) of Great Bridge, VA, four sisters-in-law; Lola Ferguson of Capital Heights, MD, Martha Scott of New York, NY, Georgetta White (Arthur) of Brooklyn, NY and Marie Harding of Richmond, VA. He also leaves to cherish his memories an adoptive brother; George Milton (Brenda) of Richmond, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends

A wake will be held on Friday June 6, 2014, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Knox-High Mortuary Chapel.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday June 7, 2014, 12:00 Noon at Knox-High Mortuary Chapel with Interment following at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Mabel Lewter Grizzard of Emporia, Va., born on May 23, 1921 in Pendleton, N. C.,passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center, Emporia.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Swanson Grizzard, Jr.  She leaves behind  to cherish her memory 3-sons; Swanson Grizzard of Williamsburg along with his son Kyle, Wiley Grizzard and his wife, Nita of Emporia along with their sons Brian and Joshua, Ben Grizzard and his special friend Kim Mousa of Emporia along with his children Amanda, Michael and Tiffany, and two daughters, Angie Claire Grizzard and her special friend Pam Thomas of Oakland, California, and Christine Williams of Roanoke Rapids, N. C. along with her two children Jason and Kim; also left to cherish her memory are seven great-grandchildren as well as many special nieces and nephews and her church family at Adams Grove Baptist Church.  Visitation will be held 1:00 P. M.  Saturday, June 7, 2014 with funeral service to follow at 2:00 P. Steven B. “Steve” Taylor, 57, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014. A Virginia Tech graduate of 1979, he worked over 30 years with Ted Lee, Inc and was a member of Concord United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Buck Taylor, Jr. and Frances Gay Stansbury and stepfather, Horace L. Stansbury. Steve is survived by his wife, Ann Marie Barnes Taylor; daughter, Ellie Taylor; four sisters, JoAnn Williams and husband, Eddie, Sue Ivey and husband, Rick, Sherry Fraunfelter and husband, Bill, and Donna Pulley; one brother, Bill Taylor; father-in-law, David Barnes; brother-in-law, Curtis Barnes and wife, Sherry and a number of nieces and nephews. Obituary-Bernadine Bowden Brookover

Bernadine Bowden Brookover, age 98, of Tarboro, NC died peacefully on Friday May 23, 2014.

She was born on July 12, 1915 in Zanesville, OH to Mary and Howard Bowden. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Bernadine is survived by three daughters, Marcylyn Kleinberg (Michael) of Sequim, WA; Marcia Headley (Fred) of Emporia, VA; and Kay Shew (Richard) of Pullman, WA; six grandsons, one granddaughter and nine great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Adamsville High School in Adamsville, OH where she was active in 4-H and played women’s basketball. She was married for 53 years to Charles Milton Brookover and lived in Wintersville, OH and retired to Pinellas Park, FL. Charles proceeded her in death in 1990.

As a homemaker, Bernadine enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening and playing cards. She was active in Wintersville United Methodist Church and served as a 4-H leader.

A memorial service was held on May 25th at The Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro, NC. Memorial contributions may be made to Monumental UMC, 300 Southampton Street, Emporia, VA 23847.

Mrs. Margaret Fulcher Grimes, age 87, died May 24, 2014.  She was the widow of William Grimes.  Mrs. Grimes was a drawend for a Textile Co. Obituary-CHRISTINE ALLISON ROBERTS

CHRISTINE ALLISON ROBERTS departed this life on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at the family home on Sussex Drive in Greensville County, Virginia after a lengthy illness. Christine was born on April 12, 1920 to the late Ferdinand Vincent Allison, Sr. and Elizabeth Rae Allison, in the Orion area of Greensville County. She moved to Emporia with her family when she was eight years old.

Christine received her formal education in the local public schools and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, VA, and a Master's Degree in School Administration and Supervision from Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.

Christine was married to the late Willie "Dinks" Roberts. This union was blessed with two sons, Willie Eugene and Alfred Allison. She faithfully cared for her husband during his extended illness, and was a loving and supportive mother to her "boys". She poured into her sons an enduring sense of faith, family, community, purpose and self-worth. In later years, she shared these same values with her grandchildren.

Christine accepted Christ at an early age and attended the Royal Baptist Church, Emporia, VA. After attending St. Paul's College, she moved her church membership to St. James Episcopal Church where she served faithfully as a choir member and leader of the Episcopal Church Women until her illness.

Christine devoted over 40 years of dedicated service to Greensville County Public Schools, starting her career in a multi-grade, one-room school house. After many years as a first grade teacher at Greensville County Training School, she finished her career teaching first grade at Emporia Elementary School. She was a caring and nurturing teacher who had a heart and passion for her students who needed her most.

Christine was also an active member of the community, giving unselfishly of her time to organizations such as the Community Youth Center, American Red Cross, Meherrin River Arts Council, Virginia and Greensville Education Associations, Greensville Teachers Association Federal Credit Union, Greensville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Democratic Party of Virginia, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Christine was a champion of the local civil rights movement and was especially committed to voter registration and voter participation, ensuring that the voices of all citizens of Greensville-Emporia were heard in local, state, and national elections.

Christine is survived by her two sons and a daughter-in-law, W. Eugene Roberts, and Al and Janet Roberts, all of Emporia, VA; three grandchildren, Ross P. Roberts and his wife Cassandra of High Point, NC, Scott A. Roberts and his wife Jennifer of Suitland, MD, and Lauren Roberts Haire and her husband Bryan of Norcross, GA; and one great-granddaughter, Nia Roberts.

She is also survived by one sister, Rosie B. Caves of Washington, DC; one sister-in-law, Lovonia E. Allison of Durham, NC; a devoted caregiver, Doreatha Carrington; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday May 17, 2014, 11:00 AM at Knox-High Mortuary Chapel, 568 Halifax Street, Emporia, Virginia.

Evelyn V. Gerke, 92, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died May 12, 2014 in Richmond, Va.. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. Gerke; her parents, Fred and Frieda Kruse; and a sister, Marjory Schwartz. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Gerke Povar and her husband, Tedd; grandson, Matthew Johnson and significant other, Celinda Gardner, of Atlanta, Ga.; grandson, Philip Johnson and wife, Lisa, of Mooseheart, Illinois; granddaughter, Laura Lawal and her husband, Akins, of Alexandria, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Kadin and Haley Johnson, Isaiah and Aderemi Lawal; brother-in-law, Mel Schwartz; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was an executive secretary for 27 years and retired in 1978. A war bride, she was married in 1943 in Walla Walla, Wash. Evelyn was a charter member of Zion Girls club, a lover of all things chocolate, especially Hershey's chocolate bars, a fast walker at Gayton Terrace, and a good and faithful steward. The family will receive friends at Hockemeyer-Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Rd., Fort Wayne, Ind., on Monday, May 19. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 20, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 1505 Bethany Lane, Fort Wayne, Ind. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery Gardens, Fort Wayne, Ind. Alice Rook Ligon, 86, of Emporia, VA, daughter of Brutus and Katie Rook, died May 2, 2014.  She is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, George Benjamin Ligon; two sisters, Kathleen Rook Ligon and Mary Rook Lyerly and one brother, Brutus Watkins Rook, Jr.  She is survived by her children, Gayle Ligon Skowronski and husband Steve, George Benjamin Ligon, Jr. and wife Mary, Sandra Ligon Allen and husband Kenny; 4 grandchildren, Benjamin Andrew Skowronski (deceased), Kay Randolph Ligon, Lindsay Kendall Allen, Kenneth Samuel Allen, Jr. and George Watkins Allen; two step-grandchildren, Mary Katherine Pratt and William Joseph Pratt.  Her remains rest at Echols Funeral Home, 806 Brunswick Ave., Emporia, VA, where the family will receive family and friends on Sunday, May 4th, 2 to 3:30pm.  A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, May 5th, at 11:00am at Emporia Cemetery, Brunswick Ave., Emporia, VA.  Memorial donations may be made to the Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Emporia Volunteer Fire Department.  Condolences may be sent to www. Franklin Felts Grizzard, Jr., 56, of Emporia, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis C. Grizzard; two daughters, Amy Gordon and husband, Kevin and Brandi Allen; three sons, Jerry W. Allen, Jr. “Bubba,” Gerald Lynch and Dustin Allen; grandchildren, Jody Allen, Chase Rawlings, Lindsey Gordon, Nicholas Gordon, Kennedi Roberts, Dakota Allen, Austin Allen, Regan Allen and Jackson Allen; great-grandson, Aubrey Burke; his mother, Sally S. Grizzard and four brothers, P.Y. Wong, Wayne Wong, Dale Grizzard and Carl Grizzard. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 1at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 2. Entombment will follow at Greensville Memorial Cemetery. Obituary-Richard Earnest Allen

Richard Earnest Allen, 83, of Emporia, died Saturday April 19, 2014. He was born to the late Henry and Ima Allen, on February 1, 1931.
Richard was passionate about gardening and lawn care. He spent most of his time enjoying the outdoors.
Richard was proceeded in death by his brother, Sidney Allen, his sister, Dorothy Harrell, and nephew Wayne Allen.
He is survived by his nieces and their families; Sue Allen along with her children; Pam Allen (Keith) and son Josh Powell, Melissa Jones (Paul) and children Summer Jones and Nicholas Wozniak, and Brandon Allen, all of Emporia. Brenda Ransom (Timothy) and her children, Corey Williams (Elani) and son Aedan, and Kenneth Ransom, all of Skippers, Va.
The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for him during his last few months.

Leland E. (Lee) Latham, 63, resident of Emporia, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 20, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Leland and Carolyn (King) Latham of Rhode Island. He is survived by his wife; Leandra Latham, step-son Erik Arminger (Montana); step-daughter Taya Arminger (Oregon); six grandchildren Sunshine Arminger (Oregon), Frederik, Thomas, & Emma Arminger and Liam and Anika Kasik (Florida); three sisters Virginia Goldstein (Virginia), Janet Latham (Massachusetts), and Carol Baker (Georgia) and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 30 at 7:00pm at The Church of Jesus Chris of Latter Day Saints  14951 Governor Harrison Parkway Highway 58 in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Barbara Jeans Barnes, a devoted, loving and caring mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully Friday, April 18, 2014.  She was born March 6, 1923 in Franklin County, NC to the late Minnie Bunn Jeans and Nathan Jeans.  She was predeceased by her husband, Furman Kelly Barnes, Sr.; two sons, Rodney Gerald Barnes, Sr. and Furman Kelly Barnes, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Janet Barnes Syring and husband Don of Waldorf, Md; Melvin Dudley Barnes and wife, Jane of Courtland, Va; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren; two daughter in-laws Mary Barnes of Superior, Wis. and Barbara Barnes of Woodbridge, Va.; her sister, Lecie Daves of Mebane, NC and her brother, Stafford Jeans and wife Tatsy of Durham, N. C.
