Franklin Felts Grizzard, Jr., 56, of Emporia, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis C. Grizzard; two daughters, Amy Gordon and husband, Kevin and Brandi Allen; three sons, Jerry W. Allen, Jr. “Bubba,” Gerald Lynch and Dustin Allen; grandchildren, Jody Allen, Chase Rawlings, Lindsey Gordon, Nicholas Gordon, Kennedi Roberts, Dakota Allen, Austin Allen, Regan Allen and Jackson Allen; great-grandson, Aubrey Burke; his mother, Sally S. Grizzard and four brothers, P.Y. Wong, Wayne Wong, Dale Grizzard and Carl Grizzard. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 1at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Obituary-Richard Earnest Allen

Richard Earnest Allen, 83, of Emporia, died Saturday April 19, 2014. He was born to the late Henry and Ima Allen, on February 1, 1931.
Richard was passionate about gardening and lawn care. He spent most of his time enjoying the outdoors.
Richard was proceeded in death by his brother, Sidney Allen, his sister, Dorothy Harrell, and nephew Wayne Allen.
He is survived by his nieces and their families; Sue Allen along with her children; Pam Allen (Keith) and son Josh Powell, Melissa Jones (Paul) and children Summer Jones and Nicholas Wozniak, and Brandon Allen, all of Emporia. Brenda Ransom (Timothy) and her children, Corey Williams (Elani) and son Aedan, and Kenneth Ransom, all of Skippers, Va.
The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for him during his last few months.

Leland E. (Lee) Latham, 63, resident of Emporia, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 20, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Leland and Carolyn (King) Latham of Rhode Island. He is survived by his wife; Leandra Latham, step-son Erik Arminger (Montana); step-daughter Taya Arminger (Oregon); six grandchildren Sunshine Arminger (Oregon), Frederik, Thomas, & Emma Arminger and Liam and Anika Kasik (Florida); three sisters Virginia Goldstein (Virginia), Janet Latham (Massachusetts), and Carol Baker (Georgia) and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 30 at 7:00pm at The Church of Jesus Chris of Latter Day Saints  14951 Governor Harrison Parkway Highway 58 in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Barbara Jeans Barnes, a devoted, loving and caring mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully Friday, April 18, 2014.  She was born March 6, 1923 in Franklin County, NC to the late Minnie Bunn Jeans and Nathan Jeans.  She was predeceased by her husband, Furman Kelly Barnes, Sr.; two sons, Rodney Gerald Barnes, Sr. and Furman Kelly Barnes, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Janet Barnes Syring and husband Don of Waldorf, Md; Melvin Dudley Barnes and wife, Jane of Courtland, Va; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren; two daughter in-laws Mary Barnes of Superior, Wis. and Barbara Barnes of Woodbridge, Va.; her sister, Lecie Daves of Mebane, NC and her brother, Stafford Jeans and wife Tatsy of Durham, N. C.

Celia C. Crewe, 88, of Omaha, devoted Christian, wife, mother and grandmother died March 21, 2014 surrounded by her sons and devoted neighbor, Sandra Aldy. Memorial Service for James “Jimmy” Millard Jones, Jr.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 in Purdy, Va. for James “Jimmy” Jones, Jr. The service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Church of the Resurrection (formally Grace Church) 9986 Purdy Road, Jarratt.  The Reverend Colin Cooper will officiate.    Jimmy Jr., age 43, passed away February 9, 2014 at his home in Cottondale, Florida. He was born on September 25, 1970 in Richmond, Va. but spent much of his life in Greensville County. Jimmy is survived by his mother Burnette Banks, his father James M. Jones, Sr. (Lisa), his loving wife April Jones; daughters, Brittany Jones, Abbey Jones, and stepdaughters ,Chelsea and Cheyenne Corbin, his brother Tommy Jones (Jennifer), sisters Michelle Jones Powell (Will), and Brynn Jones. Jimmy is the Grandson of the late Tom and Jeanette Jones of Purdy, Va. There will be a visitation and reception immediately following the service for the family to receive and visit with friends.  

Obituary-Samuel Webster Adams, III

Samuel Webster Adams, III, 64, of Emporia, Virginia died on March 19, 2014 after a long illness. Born on February 6, 1950 in Morristown, Tennessee and reared in Martinsville, Virginia, he was the son of Dr. Samuel Webster Adams, Jr. and the late Catherine Price Chambliss Adams. He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Wornom Adams.  He is survived by his father Samuel Webster Adams, Jr. and step-mother Elva Adkins Adams; wife Shelby Pair Elliott Adams of Emporia; sons Boyce Webster Adams and his wife Katie of Charlotte, NC and William Randolph Adams and his fiancée Whitney Clarke Jester of Richmond; step-sons Logan Elliott and Jason Elliott of Emporia; sisters Susan Adams Oliver and husband Kenneth Oliver of New York, Margaret Adams Joback and husband John Joback of  Leesburg; brothers William Chambliss Adams and wife Phyllis Adams of Cary, NC, John Randolph Adams and wife Mary Adams of Richmond, David Adams and wife Michelle Adams of Albuquerque, NM; George Adams and wife Kim Adams of Galax; grandson Samuel Parker Adams of Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews.

A local banker and businessman, Sam graduated from Randolph-Macon College where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. At the time of his election to the Emporia City Council in 1974, he was the youngest councilman ever elected in Virginia. He served on the Emporia City Council for 38 years, and was Mayor for 20 of them.  He was a leader in Emporia-Greensville County economic development, serving on multiple boards and commissions. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Emporia YMCA. Sam was a past president of the Virginia Municipal League, and was a founding member and past-president of the Virginia Municipal League’s Insurance Programs Member Supervisory Board. He officiated at high school basketball games throughout southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina for many years. He was a long-time member and vestryman at Christ Church (Episcopal) and later at Church of the Resurrection (Anglican).

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 23 from 3 until 5 pm at the Echols Funeral Home Chapel located on Brunswick Ave.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, March 24 at 12:00 noon at Main Street Baptist Church with interment at Emporia Cemetery, followed by a reception at First Presbyterian Church, Emporia.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Emporia-Greensville Rescue Squad or the Emporia Volunteer Fire Department.

Marie Dianne Tarbert, 68, of 515 Peachtree St., a retired Public Librarian and mother, died Wednesday early morning March 19, 2014 at Vista park Memory and Respite Facility in Petersburg, Virginia. Mrs. Tarbert was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia and attended Princess Anne High School class of 1963. Both she and her husband attended Aberdour Presbyterian Church in Jarratt. Survivors include Malcolm E. Tarbert, her husband of 43 years; 3 sons; 2 stepdaughters; 11 grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Immediate family includes 2 brothers and 2 sisters residing in Virginia Beach, Virginia and Sierra Vista, Arizona. A funeral service and reception that follows will be conducted 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Aberdour Presbyterian Church in Jarratt, Virginia with The Reverend Terry Woodard as Pastor. In lieu of flowers, contribute to the Alzhiemers Association so this horrible disease can find a cure. Dianne’s mother, Thelma Hancock, also died from Alzheimer’s just a year ago. David Hugh Justice, Jr., of Skippers, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014. He was the only son of the late David H. and Texie B. Justice. A local business owner and family man, he served as a sniper/sharpshooter in the U.S. Marine Corps, reaching the rank of Sergeant. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Jane Parker Justice, married 40 years; both parents; and a close childhood friend, Sonny Arrington. He is survived by a son, John Robert Justice and longtime girlfriend Tara Richmond of Rising Sun, MD; daughters, Susan Justice Parker and husband Alan Parker of Holyrood, KS; as well as Robin Ann Justice and husband Justin Michalicek of Chesterfield, VA; grandchildren Amber Troutman, Jonathan Justice, Jordan Justice, Jerry Doyle, AJ Parker,  and Ana Michalicek; sisters, Phyllis Lynch of FL, Carol Butler and husband Buck of FL, Dawn Smith of Amelia, VA, Gail Pennington of MD, and DeeLaine Elliott of Emporia, VA; honorary grandchildren Kate and Andrew Best; 5 great-grandchildren; 13 nieces and nephews; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Carter F. Lewis, Sr., age 72, of Freeman, Va. passed away February 25, 2014. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rena Anne Parker Lewis and his son, Carter F. Obituary-Benjamin Franklin Baker

Benjamin Franklin Baker, 91, Emporia, Virginia, died February 19, 2014 at home. Mr. Baker was born in Dyersburg, TN on May 19, 1922 to Benjamin Americus and Golden Verna Baker. He was third of nine children. Deceased sisters are Adele, Frances, Agnes, Dorothy and two living sisters Ernestine and Mildred and one brother Fred (Nellie). He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Frances Long Baker. Survivors are daughter Bettie (Tex) Gordon and two sons, Benjie and Dennis, Sister in Law Mary (Allen) Inge, six grandchildren, Leslie (Kevin) Mann, Joel (Jennifer) Gordon, Katie Baker, Bernadette (Ty) Baker-Baughman, and Theresa (Ryan) McClure, and David Baker, and four great-grand children, Sidney, Addy, Wyatt, Abigail and one to be born in June. He was a long time active member of Main Street Baptist Church serving as Deacon, Sunday School Director, choir member and many other capacities. He loved his church dearly. He was a mechanic with Watkins Ford Motor Company. He was a gifted musician who loved to entertain with his banjo and guitar. Music was his passion. He was also a great fisherman. He was a good neighbor helping anyone in need and was awarded a plaque in appreciation of continuous service to the Walnut Heights Homeowners Association for unselfish time and efforts. He was also a Navy WWII survivor at Pearl Harbor fortunate enough to return home to his family. We thank special care givers Greta, Lisa, Nan and Gentiva Hospice for Dementia, Jennifer, Frances, Queen, La Sundra, Rhonda, and sitters Sandy and Joy. Family will receive friends for the viewing at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Main Street Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm at the same location officiated by Dr. Rick Hurst. Interment will be at Emporia Cemetery. Lunch will be provided following the burial. Lula Nash Futrelle, 89, formerly of Emporia, Virginia, died  Wednesday, January 22, 2014. She was the widow of Dean Ray Futrelle and was preceded in death by her parents, Haney and Sallie Lou Nash. She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Futrelle Lawson and husband, Andy, of Midlothian, Virginia and Nan Rae Futrelle of Glen Allen, Virginia; two grandchildren, Nan Rae McGoff and husband, Michael, of Richmond, Va. and Andrew Nash Lawson of Arlington, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Addison Marie McGoff and Nash Michael McGoff; and devoted friends, Billy and Lisa Latham and their daughter, Hillary, of Emporia, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in her memory. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 8, at 12 noon at the Echols Funeral Home Chapel, 806 Brunswick Ave., Emporia, Virginia, with Rev. Colin Cooper officiating. She will be remembered as the life of the party by her friends in Emporia and Brandermill Woods.

Obituary-Donald Thomas Starke

Donald Thomas Starke, 77, of Emporia, passed away Tuesday, February 04, 2014. He was the son of the late Ashby and Florence Starke and he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Valerie S. Newsome, a brother, William “Billy” Starke and a sister, Loretta “Chick” Starke. Survivors include  his wife, Carolyn Starke; two daughters, Penny S. Holland and husband, Al and Barbara S. Wyatt and husband, Danny; a son, Nelson Thomas Starke; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Evelyn Hall and Regina Ashby; two brothers, Ashby “Red” Starke and Roger D. Starke and his extended family of caregivers at Greensville Manor. A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 8 at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Yale, Virginia. Obituary-Phillip Bruce Beville

Phillip Bruce Beville, 65, of Stony Creek, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 30, 2014. Phillip was born April 7, 1948 to Emmett Ashton and Carrie Lee Price Beville, the ninth of eleven children. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and three brothers. Phillip is survived by his brothers, Henry, William, Peter, Richard and George Beville; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank Audrey Hall and Mary Frazier, Phillip’s caregivers while he was home at Stony Creek, and who continued to visit him regurlary and cut his hair. These two ladies were a God-send and truly blessed Phillip with their compassionate and dependable care. In July, 2007, Phillip became a resident of Hopewell Health Care Center in Hopewell. For the last six years, this was home to Phillip. The nurse, aides, social workers, and other staff members at Hopewell Health Care Center were very loving and compassionate to Phillip and his daily needs. May you all be richly blessed for being part of Phillip’s extended family. The family will receive friends at the Beville home, 12507 Church St., Stony Creek, Virginia on Thursday, February 6, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Visitation will be at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia on Friday, February 7 at 2 p.m. followed by funeral services at 3 p.m. Interment will follow at High Hills Memorial Cemetery. Percy Lee House, III, passed away Saturday, Feb 1, 2014. He is survived by his fiancee’, Roxanne Barr; his parents, Percy and Maxine Daughtry House, sister, Bonnie House Ransone and husband, Randy; brother, Steven Floyd “Moose” House; nephew, Steven Floyd House, II and neice, Garnette Maxine Ransone. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 4 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd in Jarratt. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb 5 at Golden Leaf Commons, 1300 Greensville County Circle, Emporia, Virginia. Private interment will follow at House Family Cemetery. Obituary-William Michael Holland

DREWRYVILLE - Mike Holland, age 62, of Southampton County formerly of Virginia Beach, died January 30, 2014, at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia.  He was born October 24, 1951, in Alaska, to the late Marjorie Matthews Holland and Willie Morgan Holland.
 
Mike spent the later years of his life raising and selling meat goats on Holland Farm in Drewryville. He started the 4H Meat Goat Club in Chesapeake and later initiated the meat goat show for the Virginia State Fair. He was an active board member of the Greensville Emporia Ruritan Club. Previously, he was a mechanic, a softball player and an avid Redskins fan.
 
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Nancy Naigle; a son, Michael Holland of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Michelle Justice and her husband, Tom, of Virginia Beach; his in-laws,  Bettie Coffin of Emporia, VA and Gary Naigle and Greta Gustavson of Norfolk; two sisters  Patricia Dianne Bateman of New Bern, N.C. and Margaret Ann Owen and her husband, Darrold, of South Mills, N.C.;  two brothers, Richard Stephen Holland and his wife, Sheryl, of Port Orchard, WA and Jon Allen Holland of Virginia Beach; a brother-in-law, Richard Thomas of Camden, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
 
He was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Juanita Thomas, and a brother-in-law, Sidney Bateman.
 
Visitation will be held at the Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt, VA from 12-1pm on Thursday February 6, 2014. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. at Greensville Memorial Cemetery in Emporia.

Obituary-Milton “Lightening” Edward Harrell

Milton “Lightening” Edward Harrell, 83, of Emporia passed away peacefully on January 28, 2014. He was predeceased by his parents Battle and Ada Harrell of Jarratt and his 10 siblings. He is survived by his wife Edith “Billie” Harrell; stepdaughters Rita Robinson Rowell and Kathy Robinson Drummond; grandchildren Betsy Rowell Mathews (Mark), Kimberly Rowell Borkat, Christopher Harris, Frederick Fisch, Jr., and Bradford Drummond; and 7 great-grandchildren.  He was a charter member of Brink Ruritan Club, served in the Army and National Guard, was a former security guard for Greensville Memorial Hospital and he loved his family, church and country music.  A visitation will be held 1pm, Friday, February 7thin Echols Funeral Home Chapel.  A memorial service will be held at 2pm following the visitation.  Interment will follow in Forest Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Forest Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.  Condolences may be sent to www.Echolsfuneralhome.com
