Obituary-Jessie K. “Pete” Grizzard, Sr.

Jessie K. “Pete” Grizzard, Sr., 84 of Emporia, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 peacefully at his home.  He was a devoted husband and father.  Pete was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.  He also actively served his community as a Mason and later as a Shiner. Pete is preceded in death by his parents Ed and Kate Grizzard, and brothers Earl and Frank Grizzard.  He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Grace Stainback Grizzard, their children Katherine Grizzard Colvin (Gary) of Suffolk, Jessie K. Grizzard, Jr. (Sheila) of Richmond, and Terri Grizzard Johnson (Troy) of Suffolk, Grandchildren Hank Thornburg, Michelle Petcu, Chris Grizzard, Kate Thornbug, Haley Johnson, and Lucas Johnson; 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, his brothers Elmer and Benjamin, sisters Ethel Vick, Polly Proctor, Willie Mae Harris, Barbara Barlowe, Alease Braswell, and Diane Smith. Obituary-Robert H. "Bobby" Wray

Robert H. "Bobby" Wray, 84, went to Heaven to be with the Lord on June 21, 2015. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Edla Mae Hobbs Wray and his parents, Milton James Wray and Viola Saunders Wray. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Roger Holmes Wray and wife, Cathy; daughter, Teresa Wray-Welsh; grandson, Robert H. "Robbie" Wray; granddaughters, Amy Hobbs and fiance John Mise; April Clarke and husband Chris, and Wendy Gordon; great grandchildren, Kelly Finn, Nick Hobbs, Jonathan Mise, Karly Clarke, and Morgan Clarke; and special friends Frances Taylor, Tally Pernell, and Treva Pernell. Bobby always put his family first. He loved everything about the outdoors, especially hunting. He was a member and Past President of Widow’s Son Lodge #150 as well as a dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church. He will be laid to rest on June 24 at a graveside service at 11 a.m. at the Emporia Cemetery on Brunswick Avenue. Obituary-Laurice Sizer

Laurice House, Harding, Cross, Dianis, Sizer was born in Lawrenceville, VA on June 19, 1919.  She lived most of her life in Emporia and died there on June 15, 2015.  Laurice is survived by her husband Wesley Sizer.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Marie Harding Long of Winter Haven, FL, her son Lynwood French Harding of Staunton, VA and her son, Norman Anderson Harding, Jr. of Midlothian, VA.  She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Norman Anderson Harding of Richmond, Shelton Cross of Emporia and Paul Dianis of Emporia.  Laurice is survived by her son C.P. Harding of Normal, IL; her daughter in law Ann Pople Harding; grandson Nick Harding and his wife Julie Harding of Aledo, TX and great-grandsons Nicholas, Liam and Quinn also from Aledo, TX.  She is also survived by grandson Luke Harding of Chicago, IL and grandson Christopher Harding of Los Angeles, CA.  Also surviving is her daughter in law Barbara Harding (wife of Norman Jr.) of Midlothian, VA; granddaughter Angela Pigg, her husband Jimmie Pigg, great-grandson Chance Harding and his wife Kasey and their son Clyde and great-granddaughter Bethany Harding of Richmond. Grandson Andy Harding, his wife Alison; great-grandson Dillon Harding and great-granddaughter Summer Harding also survive.  Laurice is also survived by her daughter in law Wanda Harding (wife of Lyn) of Weyers Cave, VA; granddaughter Katie Harding of Raleigh, NC; and grandson William Harding, his wife Elizabeth; their daughter Madison and their son Jase of Staunton, VA.  Also surviving is one step-daughter Ketura Taylor and her husband Jack Taylor of Richmond.  Laurice is also survived by her sister Betsy Baird and husband Aubrey Baird of Bracey, VA.  She was preceded in death by her brothers Percy Lee House of Emporia and James Albert (Jack) House of Henderson, NC and by her sisters Mary House Creaseman of Norfolk, VA and Ernestine House Starke of Bracey, VA.  Laurice is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces as well as countless friends including her special friend Barbara Hargrove who cared for her over the past few years and helped her to live a very full and active life.  As she said so many times, Barbara is my special friend and I love her like a sister.  Laurice loved her family, she loved life, she loved people, she loved Emporia, VA and she loved Bingo.  She also loved her trips with groups to Atlantic City, New Jersey and she loved her trips to New York City where she appeared on The Price is Right and other television programs.  The most difficult thing a parent sometimes faces in life is the loss of a child.  Laurice faced that three times and her strength brought comfort to others during those difficult times.  Laurice has a special request of all of her family and friends.  She would like to be remembered not just with flowers or memorials to her church but with the kindness that each of you might do for others.  Do something nice for someone every day and remember Laurice…a nice lady from Emporia who always went out of her way to do kind things for others.  A visitation will be held on Wednesdaym from 1:00 to 2:00 at Echols Funeral Home Chapel followed by funeral services there at 2:00.  The funeral will be followed by interment at the Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery on the corner of Dry Bread Road and Independence Church Road.  A reception for friends and family will follow in the fellowship hall.  Condolences may be sent to

Elie Mitchell Smith, 97, died June 6, 2015. She was born in Greensville County and lived in Emporia, Va. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and India Rook Mitchell, and her husband Harvey J. Timothy Dylan Lewis, 22, passed away on June 5, 2015. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Carl and Edna Malone. Obituary-Richard Ted Blankenship

Richard Ted Blankenship, age 85, of Emporia, VA passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2015. Ted worked with Home Telephone Company until he retired in 1989. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Ted was a dedicated member of Main Street Baptist Church for 22 years.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Peggy M. Blankenship as well as many much loved nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, David and Effie Blankenship, his five brothers Brud, Walter, David, Jr., L.D., and Billy; his three sisters, Hazel Cruise, Pauline Epps, and Elizabeth Roach.

The family will receive friends at the home on Saturday June 6, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 7th at Main Street Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Main Street Baptist Church.

Obituary-Dr. Ernest Burdette Gatten, Jr.

Dr. Ernest Burdette Gatten, Jr., 92, passed away May 31, 2015 at Southampton Memorial Hospital just two weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. 

Born June 12, 1922, Dr. Gatten was the eldest son of the late Ernest Burdette Gatten, Sr. and Nan Jean Walls Gatten.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Emily Greer Gatten, and siblings William H. Gatten and Geraldine Gatten Becker. 

Dr. Gatten attended the University of Richmond prior to enlisting with the Army Air Corp in 1942.  As part of the Greatest Generation, he was proud to have served his country during World War II by flying 32 missions in Europe, including the Normandy Invasion.  He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal for completing his missions and three Oak Leaf Clusters in recognition of his combat achievement.

After the war, Dr. Gatten attended Chicago College of Optometry and the day after graduation in 1947, he married Emily Greer Gatten.  One year later, they relocated to Franklin, VA where Dr. Gatten practiced optometry until his retirement in 1991.

Dr. Gatten was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church and served as past chairman of the Deacons’ Board.  He was also an active leader in the Franklin community.  He was a founding member of the Franklin Chamber of Commerce and served on the first Franklin YMCA Board of Directors.  Dr. Gatten was also appointed to the first Franklin school board where he served the community for 10 years.  He actively supported the Franklin Lions club and the Franklin Library Board.  Professionally, he served on the Virginia Opticians Board for ten years and was a past president of the Virginia Academy of Optometry and the Virginia Optometric Association.

Dr. Gatten was an accomplished water colorist, leaving a lasting legacy of beautiful works of art.  He was instrumental in the formation of today’s Rawls Musem Arts organization and the construction of the existing art education building and gallery spaces located in Courland.

Dr. Gatten is survived by his daughter Caroline J. Gatten of Emporia, VA; sons E. Burdette Gatten, III (Joann) and Charles G. Gatten, both of Franklin; and two granddaughters, Gabrielle G. Gatten and Barclay B. Gatten.  He is also remembered by a special niece, Rebecca Gatten Jester (Frank) of Franklin and their children Meredith and William DeLuca and a host of other extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday June 4, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at the Franklin Congregational Christian Church, 412 N. High Street in Franklin, VA with the Rev. James H. Hyatt, Jr officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Franklin Congregational Christian Church or Rawls Musem Arts, Inc. in Courtland. Jean Talley Blackwell of Dolphin, Virginia, age 83, a retired Brunswick Academy school teacher, died June 3, 2015. She was a member of Dolphin Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her husband C. Dale Blackwell, she is survived by her two sons and their wives, Kevin and Terry Blackwell of Dolphin and Allen Meade and Beth Blackwell of Emporia; and five grandchildren, Austin, Mackenzie, Kaylin, Kelly and Karly. Paige Harrell Gay went home to be with the Lord today, May 13, 2015. She lived full life on this earth. She had a large family. Preceded in death by her husband, William Rufus Gay and one sister, Lucy Harrell Wilson and two brothers, Melvin and Rufus Harrell. She leaves behind five children. William Richard Gay, Tony Craig Gay, Jessica Glenn Gay and Tammy Gay Harrington, all of Emporia and Timothy Russell Gay of Prince George. She has seven grand children. Betty Jean Kellam Harrison, 74, of Littleton NC, went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2015 after a brief illness.   Born February 23, 1941, in Fredericksburg VA, she was the daughter of Elizabeth and Walter Kellam.   Betty was a 1961 graduate of Greensville County High School and later attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, VA.  She was a devoted and well-loved employee of Greensville Memorial Hospital for over 35 years and later enjoyed her retirement living on Lake Gaston.   Betty was known for her strength and her beauty and was crowned Miss Emporia of 1961.   She had unending love for her family and was the greatest wife, mother, and grandmother that a family could ever hope for.   She was a wonderful cook and loved preparing meals for her family during holidays and visits.   Her special ingredient was love, which always made everything she cooked taste that much better.   She also took great pride in her home and was a gifted decorator who put her signature touches on everything inside her home and loved working in the flowers in her yard.   Betty was the most nurturing and supportive mother and grandmother and no family was more blessed to have that love for what seems like a far too brief period of time.   This love extended to her pets and she treasured each one of her beagles throughout the years and cherished them as though they were another one of her children.   She is survived by her soulmate and husband of 52 years Clyde Harrison, of Littleton NC; her son Chris Harrison and his wife Karen of Mechanicsville, VA; her grandchildren Conner Harrison and Kaitlyn Harrison of Mechanicsville, VA; her brother Marvin Kellam and his wife Theresa of Powhatan; her brother Wayne Kellam of Fredericksburg, VA and her beloved beagle Dixie.   She will be forever missed but never forgotten.   Her family will receive friends at 5pm Tuesday, May 5 th, at Owen Funeral Home, 303 South Halifax Road, Jarratt, VA 23867, where a memorial service will follow at6pm.   Private interment will be at Grace Anglican Church at a later date, where she was a lifetime member.   Online condolences may be directed to

Obituary-LeRoy Norman Clarke, Jr.

LeRoy Norman Clarke, Jr. age 72, of Jarratt, VA, passed away on April 21, 2015 at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond, VA.

There will be a memorial service held at 6:00 PM on May 11, 2015 at Fountain Grove Baptist Church. This will be a family reunion style event with friends and family coming together to enjoy good food in remembrance of Lee.

Lee was born in Emporia, Virginia on December 9, 1942. He was married to Frances L. Clarke for 53 years. Lee is survived by his three children, David L. Clarke and his wife Kimberly P. Clarke, Lori C. Schaffer; Kimberly C. Williams and her husband Stuart W. Williams, his 4 grandchildren Jordan L. Clarke, Joshua P. Clarke, Mikayla L. Clarke and Corey J. Williams; his siblings, Angela Harvey and her husband Gerald, Bill Tudor and his wife Robin, Bruce Tudor and Don Tudor; his nieces and nephews; and the rest of his family and friends.

Lee is preceded in death by his father, LeRoy Norman Clarke, Sr. and his mother Elsie Allen Tudor and step-father Gene Tudor; as well as his sister, Connie T. Jones.

Lee retired from the Department of Corrections. He was passionate about genealogy, but was happiest spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Lee was a transplant recipient and we would like everyone to consider becoming an organ donor in his memory. You can go to and select your state to find out more information and to register.

Obituary-Betty McNeely Reynolds

Betty McNeely Reynolds, 95, of Martinsville passed away on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Blue Ridge Rehab Center. She was born on October 23, 1919 in Henry County to the late George Lester McNeely and Lena May Motley McNeely. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Aubrey Reynolds; son, Barry B. Reynolds; grandson Troy Motley; sisters, Louise M. Harmon, Violet McNeely and Shirley M. Weddle and brothers, Glen McNeely, William McNeely, Walter McNeely and Bobby McNeely.

She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, Martinsville and was a homemaker/caregiver.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn R. Koger (Robert) of Martinsville, Diana R. Blick (Earl) of Emporia and Margaret R. Mura of Danville; son and daughter-in-law, Donald “Don” A. Reynolds (Ruthie) of Callands; sisters, Roslyn M. Ashby of Axton and Aileen M. Eanes of Columbus, GA; brother, Billy McNeely of Martinsville; 11 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Temple Baptist Church with son, Pastor Don Reynolds officiating. Burial was at County Line Christian Church, Axton.

The family received  friends on Tuesday evening, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the church.

Obituary -Maurice Arnold Edwards

Deacon Maurice Arnold Edwards (September 6, 1942-March 26, 2015)
On September 6, 1942, Maurice Arnold Edwards was born to the late John C. and Delilah L. Edwards in Emporia, Virginia.  He was the youngest of eight siblings.
Maurice Edwards was a man of wisdom, who was given many gifts and talents from God.  He exemplified the love of Christ. He was a very devoted and loving husband and father.  Deacon Maurice Edwards was a key pillar—a servant leader—of Royal Baptist Church, where he was an ordained deacon. Deacon Maurice Edwards served as the treasurer, trustee, SundaySchool teacher, musician, and a member of the culinary ministry of Royal Baptist Church.
Deacon Edwards loved gospel music and he loved to play it on his bass guitars. He was a long-time member of the gospel music group, the Sensational Starlight Singers of Emporia, Virginia.  Maurice also shared his musical gift with the church by playing for the Royal Baptist Church Senior Choir.
Outside of the church, Deacon Maurice Edwards was a very keen businessman—an entrepreneur at heart.  He owned an auto mechanic shop and was a realtor.  Maurice Edwards was a lamplight to all who came to know him. Deacon Edwards was a mentor who touched the lives of many people. 
Left to cherish his memories are: his wife of 50 years, Ruth Mabrey Edwards; two daughters, Kimberly Edwards Hitchman, and Karen Edwards Atkins; two sons-in-law, Robert S. Hitchman, Jr. and Leroy F. Atkins, five grandchildren (listed in order) Robert S. Hitchman, III, Alexis S. Hitchman, Kara L. Atkins, Kera L. Atkins, and Ariel S. 
Hitchman; and three sisters:  Eugenia E. Sills, Marion E. Brown, and Barbara Edwards. He also leaves two close friends/brothers-in-law: Lloyd Mabrey and Junius Mabrey, his close friend, Bernard Pair, Sr., along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to cherish his memories.
Funeral service for Mr.Edwards will be conducted on Thursday,April 2, 2015 at 1:00 the Royal Baptist Church, Emporia,VA; Rev. Nathan Brooks, Pastor.
Interment to follow in the Zion Community Cemetery~Lowground Road, Emporia,VA.

Obituary-Hazel Harrison Wrenn Ferguson

Hazel Harrison Wrenn Ferguson passed away on March 29, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with various forms of cancer.   Born on May 14, 1925 in Greensville County, Hazel was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Frederick Harrison and Mrs. Ethel Brantley Jones Harrison. Mrs. Ferguson was a 1942 graduate of Greensville County High School. In 1945 she married Roland Lee Wrenn and was married for forty-one years until his sudden death in 1986.  In 1988 she married Eugene Ferguson of Jarratt, Virginia who preceded her in death in 1999. Mrs. Ferguson was an active member of St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Emporia,Virginia. Mrs. Ferguson was very active in the Woodman of the World Fraternal Organization both on the local and the state level, having served as Treasurer for Emporia Lodge # 287 for 35 years, and having served as Virginia Jurisdictional President from 1993 until 1995. She was employed for 30 years with Emporia Medical Associates until 1989.  Mrs. Ferguson is survived by an only son, Dennis Wayne Wrenn, and his wife, Judith Harrison Wrenn of Midlothian, Virginia; two grandsons, Bradford Harrison Wrenn of Pokomoke, Maryland and Bryan Sterling Wrenn of Hayes, Virginia, their wives, Stephanie Samuels Wrenn and Jennifer Davis Wrenn; five great-grandchildren, Berkeley Harrison Wrenn,  Brandon Sterling Wrenn, Tyler Davis Wrenn, Leeanne Montgomery Wrenn, and Nicholas James Wrenn. To her great-grandchildren she was affectionately called “Nee-Nee”.  Mrs. Ferguson is also survived by her loving sisters Mrs. Polly Wray and Mrs. Peggy Allen. She was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, one half-brother, and five half-sisters. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.  Dennis and Judy will receive their Richmond and Midlothian friends at their home from 7:00-9:00 PM on Thursday, April 2, 2015.  Visitation for Emporia friends and family will take place at Echols Funeral Home, 806 Brunswick Avenue, Emporia, Virginia 23847 on Friday, April 3, 2015 at 1:30 prior to the service to be held in the Chapel at Echols at 3:00 with entombment immediately following at the Greensville Memorial Cemetery.  Condolences may be sent to
