Roland H. Gillam

Roland H. Gillam, 52, of Emporia passed away Thursday, April 2, 2020. He was the son of the late Walter and Elsie Barnes Gillam

Roland is survived by his significant other, Tori Weaver; daughter, Kim Gillam; son, Brandon Gillam; two brothers, Randy Gillam (Janet) and Ronnie Gillam (Christine); cousins, Ricky Bradley (Ladorne) and Dianne Clary (Jeff) and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Hospice Support Group of Southside Virginia or to the American Cancer Society or to Calvary Baptist Church.

Anna Smith Jarratt

December 13, 1947 - April 01, 2020

Anna Smith Jarratt, 72, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center. She was born December 13, 1947 in Emporia, Virginia. While raising her children that she loved dearly, she ran the Emporia-Greensville Recreation Association community pool and concession stand from 1977 until the closure of the Center Street park. Anna then went to work for the Greensville County Public School system where she loved helping all of “her children” and retired after twenty years. Following retirement, Anna obtained her beautician’s license and enjoyed her daily interactions with dear friend and colleague, Barbara Barlow and all those who visited to get a trim or just catch up on the “daily news”. She enjoyed working in her yard and embellishing it with “ornaments”. She had tremendous faith and loved everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Davis Pete and Betsy Rook Smith.

Anna is survived by William T. Jarratt, Sr. ‘Tommy”; her loving children; William T. Jarratt, Jr. “Timmy” (Lori), Stuart Craig Jarratt, and Trista Jarratt Clements (Robert); sisters, Frances Peirce (Stephen) of Abilene, TX, Hilda Harrell of Emporia; and brother, Wayne White (Linda) of Sedley, VA; grandchildren, Dustan T. Jarratt (Emily) of Emporia, Lynsey Jarratt Overstreet of Farmville, Brooklyn N. Jarratt of Urbanna, Kayla L. Jarratt, Austin C. Jarratt, Sumer B. Clements, Carleigh B. Jarratt, Allie M. Jarratt, and Cora, Alyce and Anna Clements, all of Emporia; great-grandchildren, Hudson and Ryland Jarratt of Emporia, Lailah and Rilee Baylor of Urbanna, Aubrie and Reed Overstreet of Farmville, Dakota and Daxton Ferguson of Emporia and a number of nieces and nephews. Anna will also be forever remembered by her extended family and dear friends.

Dottie Williams

April 09, 1937 - April 01, 2020

Dottie Williams, 82, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at Mary View Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia after a brief illness. She grew up on the family farm in Skippers that she loved so much.

Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Rachel; brothers, Billy ‘Wimp” and Freddie; her sister, Barbara Little and a nephew, Stacy Little. She is survived by her brothers, The Reverend Kenneth Williams (Shirley) of Newsoms, Virginia and Eddie Williams (Jo Ann) of Emporia; nieces, Nancy Jenkins (Whitey), Kathie Isles (Bobby), Penny Baugham (Lynn) and Tracy Williams; nephews, Wayne Williams (LeeAnn), Marlon Little (Sylvia) and Trent Williams (Dawn). She also is survived by numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins and friends whom she loved dearly. Dottie greatly missed her church and her church family at Forest Hill Baptist Church after she moved to Courtland Health and Rehab. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Barbara R. Finch

July 17, 1956 - March 29, 2020

Barbara R. Finch, 63, of Emporia, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Richard H. & Doris Christine Rawlings and was also preceded in death by her husband, William S. Finch and a son, Lynn Finch.

Barbara is survived by two sons, Anthony Finch (Devin) and Jordy T. Finch (Sarah) and daughter, Leigh Ann Lewis (Nick); grandchildren, Bryce and Camryn Finch and Steven and Evan Lewis and a brother, James J. “Opie” Rawlings.

Barbara was a Licensed Practical Nurse and had spent her entire career at what is now Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center Emergency Department. She loved her co-workers and considered them her extended family. She also loved baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves and attended faithfully the ball games of her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Zion Baptist Church, c/o Missy Bullock, 2755 Rolling Acres Rd., Emporia, Virginia 23847 or to Greensville Memorial Foundation, P.O Box 1015, Emporia, Virginia 23847.

Hazel S. Story, 82, of Emporia, passed away Monday, March 9, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Gencie Stow and two brothers, Harvey and Elso Stow.

Hazel is survived by two sons, Robert Anthony O’Bannon (Sandra) of Emporia and James L. “Jim” Story (Sylvia) of Corpus Cristi, TX; six grandchildren; nephew, Tommy Stow and niece, Lori Ann Taylor, both of Missouri.

The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Saturday, March 14 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia. A graveside funeral service will follow at High Hills Memorial Cemetery.

William Lawrence Rodgester, Jr., 80, of Ivor, passed away Monday, March 9, 2020. Born September 1, 1939; he was the son of the late W. L. Rodgester and Josie Vincent Rodgester and was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Hugh Pittman. William is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Rodgester of Ivor; three daughters, Nancy R. Suits (Ronnie) of Drewryville, Lisa R. Henry (Chris) of Suffolk and Robin R. Pittman of Capron; grandchildren, Dustin L. Suits (Kim), Ryan K. Suits, Mackenzie Ferguson (Phillip), Zach Gray (Alyssa), Josh Gray, Tori Gray and Mayson Henry; great-grandchildren, Hunter Suits, Kaysen Everett; and Job, Gracie Ann and Jameson Ferguson; His sisters, Dolly Wray (Aubrey) and Polly Bowen (Charles), all of Jarratt and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private at Circle R. Farm in Ivor, Virginia.

Brian C. Simmons, 47, of Skippers, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020. Joe Garnet “Jody” Whitley, Jr.

Joe Garnet “Jody” Whitley, Jr., of Emporia, VA passed away on March 1, 2020, after a short illness.

He was born in Page, VA., on July 11, 1949 to the late Joe Garnet and Julia Wallace Whitley, Sr. He was preceded in death by his sister, Irene “Pat” Whitley Pearson. He is survived by his sister, Brenda Whitley Klassen of Placentia, California; nephew Martin (Ari) Klassen and niece, Michelle Klassen (T.R.) Lind; his brother, Reese J. (Bonnie) Whitley of Bedford, VA.; nephew Reinor Jay (Patricia) Whitley of Brambleton, Virginia and niece Jennifer Whitley (Rob) McCarthy of Tampa, Florida.

Jody graduated from Garden High School in 1967, and attended two years of Diesel Mechanic School in Abingdon, VA. He spent the majority of his working years in Ford-Mercury-Lincoln dealerships and heavy duty truck and earth moving equipment dealers.

While he described himself as “Just an auto mechanic”, Jody, throughout his life, loved building engines for professional race cars. He enjoyed years of friendship with people involved in NASCAR racing. As a hobby, he enjoyed rebuilding old cars to the point where they appeared to have just rolled off the assembly line. His favorite “rebuild” was a 1967 Mustang “Boss” model, painted candy apple red and white. When something broke around the house, be it a lawn mower, the washing machine, a stove, or even a watch, Jody could fix it. He also enjoyed reading and spending time with “Fuzz”, his cat.

In keeping with Jody’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. There will be a private family burial service later at the family burial site in Bluefield, VA.

Mrs. Paige Jarratt Barnes, 94, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Dr. T. F. Jarratt and Elsie Davis Jarratt and was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Y. “Sleepy” Barnes and her sister, Mary Ann Kellogg. Paige was a lifelong active member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Jarratt where she was organist and choir director for over fifty years. She also was the longtime organist at Owen Funeral Home. Some of her favorite pastimes were her church life and dining out with close friends. Mrs. Barnes is survived by two sons, Thomas Y. Barnes and Benjamin J. “Benny” Barnes (Cindy); grandson, Brandon Jarratt Barnes (Amanda); two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Caroline and special niece, Judy Barnes Owen and husband, Ben. A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1 at High Hills Cemetery. Melody Cifers Keeter, 51, of Emporia, VA, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

She is survived by her husband, Travis W. Keeter, Sr.; two children, Travis W. Keeter, Jr. and Amber K. Aerni (Ryan); one grandson, Jaxon C. Keeter (his mother, Megan), and one granddaughter, Kimber L. Aerni.  She is also survived by her mother and father, Betty and Harvey Cifers, Sr.; two brothers, Harvey L. Cifers, Jr. (Kelli) and Gary L. Cifers; two sisters, Sherry C. Phillips (Kevin) and Judy C. Fox (Wyndham); two nieces, Ciara Cifers and Meghan Fox; two nephews, Justin Phillips and Hunter Cifers; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and faithful furbabies, Mandy and Dyson.

Melody is now with her guardian angels, nephew, Nathaniel W. Fox, father-in-law, Charles M. Keeter, and family friends, Buddy Sabo, Kathi Detamore, and Kenny Wilson.

Ernest L. “Chief” Bailey, 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 25, 2020. He was preceded in death by his mother, Emma Babson and a sister, Mamie Faye Williams. Ernest was born in Emporia, Virginia and was retired from Boarshead Provisions in Jarratt. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. A very special person, Ernest spent every Sunday afternoon visiting nursing homes and friends who were ill. He was a loving and devoted husband survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy H. Bailey; his precious cat, Fluffy; sister, Irene B. Ogletree (Frank); brothers, Jerry Bailey (Marie) and Cleo Bailey (Louise) and numerous nieces and nephews that Peggy and he considered as the children they never had. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday, January 27 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Virginia. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 28 at Calvary Baptist Church with entombment at Greensville Memorial Cemetery. Allen R. Guy, 67, of Skippers, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2020. He is survived by his son, David Allen Guy (Dawn Callahan); daughter, Tammy Guy Moseley (Caleb); grandchildren, Brittany Carroll, Tristan Council and Camryn Council; sister, Darlene Stepp; brothers, Benny Guy (Paula) and Lewis Guy (Debbie) and six nieces and nephews.

Allen is also survived by his longtime companion, Peggy Loveless and her family, daughters, Nikki Rhinehart (Billy) and Lynn Jones (Ricky); sons, Glenn Taylor and Scotty Loveless, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bernard J. “Pete” Hobbs, Jr., 63, of Emporia, passed away Friday, January 3, 2020. He was the son of the late Jack and Edna Hobbs.

Josephine "Queenie" Cicalese-Bost Passed peacefully in her sleep on April 8, 2015. Born and raised in Newark NJ to the late Teresina (Tomesetti) and Frank Cicalese, she moved to Emporia, VA 8 years ago. She was preceeded in death by her husband Robert Bost of East Newark NJ.  She is survived by one brother, Frank Cicalese of Macon GA, 5 children; Tammy Greco, Theresa Hicks, Ron Edwards, Frank Edwards and Rob Edwards, 13 grandchildren; Phil, Chris, Charles, Autumn, Kayla, Jessie, Cassie, Gina, Frank, Anthony, Lane, Maddison and Chase. Special "adopted" family : JT, Squirrel and Derrick and beloved pets; Pepper, Shadow, Mozzie and Athena. Her ashes will be placed alongside her husband in Holy Cross Cemetary, North Arlington NJ on April 18, 2015.
