Wichita Police Officers Arrive in DC to Assist with Inauguration Duties

The Wichita Police Department (WPD) has dispatched 40 of its officers to Washington, D.C., to assist with security measures during the 60th Presidential Inauguration on Monday, January 20, 2025.

This collaboration underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies nationwide to ensure a safe and orderly transition of power.

WPD’s Commitment to National Security

Responding to a request from the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department made over a year ago, the WPD selected 40 officers from various ranks to participate in this significant event.

Chief Gordon Ramsay emphasized that this opportunity serves as a valuable experience for the officers, allowing them to contribute to a national event while gaining insights into large-scale security operations.

Role and Responsibilities of WPD Officers

Upon arrival, the WPD officers were deputized by the U.S. Marshals Service, granting them federal authority to operate within the jurisdiction of Washington, D.C., during the inauguration events. Their primary responsibilities include maintaining perimeter security along the parade route and supporting crowd management efforts.

Chief Ramsay clarified that these officers would not be directly involved in handling civil disturbances, as their focus remains on ensuring the safety of attendees and the general public.

National Collaborative Security Efforts

The involvement of WPD officers is part of a broader initiative that sees nearly 4,000 officers from various law enforcement agencies across the United States converging in the capital to bolster security for the inauguration.

This collective effort includes contributions from the Kansas City Police Department, which is sending 50 officers, and the Kansas Highway Patrol, deploying 25 troopers to assist with the detail. Such nationwide collaboration highlights the unified approach to safeguarding the inauguration proceedings.

Comprehensive Security Measures in Washington, D.C.

In preparation for the inauguration, Washington, D.C., has implemented extensive security protocols to address potential threats and ensure public safety.

The U.S. Secret Service, leading the security planning as the designated National Special Security Event (NSSE) coordinator, has established a robust plan that includes:

  • Security Screening Checkpoints: Multiple checkpoints are set up to monitor and control access to key areas, ensuring that only authorized individuals can enter sensitive zones.
  • Fencing and Barriers: Approximately 30 miles of fencing and concrete barriers have been installed to secure the perimeter around the National Mall, the U.S. Capitol, and other critical locations.
  • Surveillance Enhancements: The deployment of surveillance drones and other technologies enhances the ability to monitor large crowds and swiftly respond to any incidents.
  • Law Enforcement Presence: In addition to the nearly 4,000 visiting officers, the entire Metropolitan Police Department will be activated, supported by approximately 7,800 National Guard members, to maintain order and provide rapid response capabilities.
