After nearly 15 years, NYCHA has decided to re-open its wait list for Section 8 housing applications, providing a much-needed opportunity for those in need of affordable housing.
NYCHA’s Housing Choice Voucher program will be accepting applications from June 3 at midnight until June 9 at the end of the day.
Due to a severe scarcity of affordable housing and the overcrowding of city shelters, the applications have been reopened.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced that after 15 years, NYCHA is reopening its doors to hundreds of thousands of new Section 8 applicants. This move is aimed at helping more New Yorkers to find the housing they need. He added that addressing the housing crisis in the city requires the use of every tool available. The city is committed to advancing 24 housing projects on public land this year through its ’24 in 24′ plan. Additionally, efforts are being made to build more housing in every neighborhood through the ‘City of Yes for Housing Opportunity’ proposal. The ultimate goal is to help every New Yorker find and stay in their home.
According to housing advocate Gina Cappuccitti, the escalating rents in New York City have made it impossible for numerous residents to afford homes outside of NYCHA.
“Many individuals are discovering that the cost of living in New York City is becoming increasingly unaffordable. However, this presents a unique chance for those seeking to stay in the city without bearing an overwhelming financial burden or the risk of eviction down the line.”
Currently, the program has over 25,000 participating households and approximately 85,000 housing vouchers.
The idea of a better life is what motivates aspiring applicants.
“I’ve come from nothing to something, and I’m not really where I want to be right now, and I want to be the best I can be for my family,” said Fort Green resident Kadisha.
Eligible households can apply for the program through NYCHA’s website .
