While magnet fishing in a pond in Queens, a lucky couple from New York City stumbled upon a safe containing nearly $100,000, potentially hitting the jackpot.
On Friday, James Kane and Barbie Agostini were magnet fishing at a pond in Queens when they made an incredible discovery – a muddy safe. The couple, who frequently share their finds on social media, were shocked to find hundreds of soaked bills worth an estimated $100,000 inside the safe when they opened it, according to Spectrum News NY1.
During an interview with NY1, Kane mentioned that they had come across several old safes in the past but had never discovered anything significant inside them. However, things took a different turn this time around. According to Agostini, she thought Kane was teasing her when he revealed the contents of the safe.
Agostini told NY1 that when she saw the actual dollars and the security ribbons, she lost it.
Magnet anglers allowed to keep safe
Upon discovering the safe, the couple decided to reach out to the NYPD to ensure that there were no legal complications involved. Fortunately, it turned out that the owner of the safe, who was believed to be a victim of theft, could not be identified. As a result, the authorities gave the couple the green light to keep the safe and all its contents.
According to Kane’s statement to NY1, the problem was that the bills were completely drenched and in a significantly damaged state.
The couple’s strategy for salvaging their newfound stash remains uncertain at this time.
The NYPD has stated that it is mandatory to report and deposit found property worth ten dollars or more with the police. However, in the case at hand, the value and authenticity of the currency found could not be determined due to its severely disintegrated condition.
According to Kane, they decided to take up magnet fishing as a way to alleviate their boredom during the pandemic.
On YouTube, the duo showcases their unique findings which range from World War II grenades, 19th-century firearms, a motorcycle, to even a wallet filled with foreign coins, pearls, and gold jewels.
