When Orit Meir received the call saying that her son, 22-year-old Almog Meir Jan, had been rescued on Saturday, she was overwhelmed with disbelief and pure joy.
On Monday, Meir exclaimed to ABC News, “I screamed! I was overjoyed… it was an incredibly exciting moment.”
She added that she had never lost hope and kept telling herself that he would come back to her.
On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces successfully rescued Jan along with three other hostages from central Gaza. Jan, along with Noa Argamani (25), Andrey Kozlov (27), and Shlomi Ziv (40) were abducted from the Nova music festival in Israel on Oct. 7.
On Sunday, Meir finally had a good night’s rest after her son was held hostage.
Filled with emotion, she expressed, “I slept all night yesterday with a smile.”
She expressed her desire for all the families of the hostages to experience what she did, stating, “I want a miracle for them, like the one I received.”
According to Meir, it is important for the Israeli government and the international community to apply “pressure” on Hamas to reach an agreement that would ensure the prompt release of the remaining hostages.
On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the rescue operation and stressed that the Israeli military will continue its efforts until all of the remaining hostages are found. Netanyahu described the operation as “remarkable.”
According to him, the Hamas militants are the killers and kidnappers, and our soldiers are fighting valiantly and morally to emerge victorious in this war. He believes that we will eventually prevail over the militants.
According to IDF officials, the four hostages were found to be in good medical condition following their successful rescue.
According to Jan’s uncle, the 22-year-old is physically doing well and they were initially anticipating a much worse outcome.
According to Jan’s mother, he had the opportunity to watch Al-Jazeera during his captivity and was surprised to see photos of himself at an Israel rally.
According to the IDF, the hostages were successfully rescued from two distinct locations in Nuseirat, which is situated in central Gaza. The Nuseirat camp has become a safe haven for numerous refugees who have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the IDF operation in Nuseirat on Saturday resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of Palestinians. Hamas officials have confirmed this devastating news on Sunday.
On Monday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged nations with ties to Hamas to encourage them to accept the current cease-fire proposal.
Blinken urged governments and people across the region to take action towards achieving a cease-fire and alleviating the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. He emphasized the need to press Hamas for a positive response in order to secure the release of all hostages and pave the way for a more sustainable peace in the region. Blinken underlined that preventing the conflict from escalating further is crucial and can be achieved by urging Hamas to agree to a cease-fire.
