Jason Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, recently provided an update on the health of his grandfather. After spending more than a year in hospice care, it is good to hear news about his condition.
According to Jason Carter, the oldest grandchild of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, his grandfather is doing his best to navigate through life without his wife by his side. In an interview with Southern Living, he shared that Jimmy is “experiencing the world as best he can as he continues through this process”.
According to him, Jimmy Carter doesn’t wake up every day, but when he does, he spends time with his loved ones in his beloved home in Plains, Georgia, and even cracks a few jokes from time to time.
In 2020, the world lost Rosalynn Carter, who passed away at the age of 96. Her husband, Jimmy Carter, who is currently 99 years old, entered hospice in February 2023. The Carter Center, a global charity founded by the couple after his presidency, confirmed the news in a statement, revealing that the former president had made the decision to receive hospice care and spend his remaining time at home with his family, instead of opting for further medical treatment.
According to Jason Carter, hospice care is not always a short-term option despite its common association with the final days of someone’s life. In an interview with Southern Living, Jason revealed that his family initially anticipated that Jimmy Carter would only require hospice care for a few days, but they were proven wrong as “God had other plans.”
During the 28th Rosalynn Carter Georgia Mental Health Forum at the Carter Center, Jason Carter shared his thoughts on the significance of the faith journey. He emphasized that there is a crucial aspect of this journey that can only be experienced at the very end, and he believes that former President Jimmy Carter has already reached that point.
Last month, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that he shared the story of his grandfather’s emotional farewell to Rosalynn Carter before she passed away. According to him, his grandfather spent hours bidding her goodbye.
