Severe thunderstorms are expected to roar across the Plains and Midwest ahead of a cold front.
Cities like Chicago and Kansas City face the biggest threat.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 3 out of 5 on the severe storm risk scale, affecting over 2 million people in other large cities, including Peoria and Moline in Illinois, Davenport and Iowa City in Iowa, and St. Joseph, Missouri.
While severe storms could form in a 1,000-mile region from eastern Colorado and Wyoming into Michigan, the best chance for severe storms appears to be from northern Kansas to southern Michigan, where the most atmospheric energy will develop.
While supercells with massive hail are conceivable, it appears that clusters of storms and their associated severe wind gusts will pose the greatest threat. Tornadoes are also a possibility.
