Michael Mosley, the missing British doctor and TV presenter, was discovered deceased on Sunday morning on the Greek island where he was last seen. His family confirmed the tragic news. The discovery came after a massive search operation was launched when Mosley went missing during a walk on Wednesday.
Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley, Michael’s wife, described him as a daring individual, which was one of the qualities that set him apart from others. She shared with the Associated Press that losing Michael was heartbreaking for her. Michael was not just her husband, but also someone who possessed a unique combination of humor, kindness, and intelligence. The couple had a beautiful life together, and they cherished each other deeply. Their love for each other brought them immense happiness and joy.
According to a statement from Mosley’s wife, he mistakenly took the wrong path during his hike and collapsed in a location that was difficult to spot, as reported by the Associated Press. While authorities confirmed the discovery of a body after a thorough search for Mosley that lasted multiple days, they have not yet released the identity of the deceased publicly.
Searchers on a private boat discovered the body on a rocky coast, approximately a 30-minute walk from the village of Pedi where Mosley was last spotted before disappearing. Various officials, including a police spokesperson who spoke anonymously due to the ongoing investigation, confirmed the discovery. Formal identification of the body is still pending. However, a police source, who spoke to the BBC, a partner of CBS News, stated that the individual had been deceased “for a number of days.”
Mosley went missing on the Greek island of Symi on Wednesday afternoon while going for a walk. His absence last week sparked a massive search operation by the coast guard, police, and fire officials, who utilized drones, a police dog, and a helicopter to track him down over many days of high heat.
The island’s mayor, Lefteris Papakalodoukas, told The Associated Press that he was in the boat with members of the media when they discovered a body about 20 meters above the Agia Marina beach shortly after 10 a.m.
“We zoomed in with the cameras and saw it was him,” he stated.
According to the mayor, the body looked to have slid down a steep slope before colliding with a fence and laying face-up on top of a few rocks. The body was holding a leather bag in one hand, according to Antonis Mystiloglou, a cameraman for state TV ERT who was also on the boat.
The BBC stated that a coroner has already examined the remains. Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou told the network that officials needed to rule out any chance of foul play.
“We need to get a first insight into the causes of death and whether [it] preceded the person’s fall to the ground,” Dimoglidou stated to the BBC.
Mosley, 67, was well-known in Britain for his regular television and radio appearances, as well as his column in the Daily Mail. His role as executive producer on the BBC scientific documentary “The Human Face,” starring Elizabeth Hurley, Pierce Brosnan, and David Attenborough, earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 2022.
Outside of the United Kingdom, Mosley was known for his 2013 book “The Fast Diet,” which he co-authored with journalist Mimi Spencer. The book recommended the so-called “5:2 diet,” which promised to help people lose weight quickly by limiting their calorie consumption two days a week while eating properly the remaining five.
He later launched a quick weight-loss program and produced several diet and workout films.
Mosley often pushed his body to extremes to test the effects of his diets, and he also spent six weeks with tapeworms in his stomach for the BBC documentary “Infested! Living with Parasites.”
Mosley has four children with his wife, who is a doctor, author, and health columnist. Claire Bailey Mosley praised the people of Symi for their hard efforts to find her husband, which confirmed his death.
“Some of these people on the island, who hadn’t even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked,” she continued. The outpouring of affection from individuals all across the world has greatly soothed my family and me. It’s apparent Michael meant a lot to so many of you.
