Sadly, the young woman who had won the hearts of many across the Tri-State with her groundbreaking and life-saving surgery has passed away.
In 2011, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital featured 7-year-old Heather McNamara in one of their commercials. She may be a familiar face to many people.
She shared in the advertisement how doctors had to remove and replace several of her organs to eliminate a tumor the size of a baseball.
“The Good Doctor” even featured the rare 23-hour procedure in one of its episodes.
Despite being told by other doctors that it was an impossible surgery, the procedure was eventually performed on her. The fact that she was the first child ever to undergo such a procedure made it all the more astounding. Fortunately, the surgery was a resounding success.
Kemberly Richardson, a reporter for Eyewitness News, had the delightful opportunity.
“At the time, she expressed her fear of dying, but also acknowledged that she had a sense of peace about it. It may seem paradoxical, but that was how she felt,” she shared.
In memory of Heather, her family is requesting everyone to perform a kind act as a tribute to this exceptional young lady who lived every moment to the fullest.
