KC Streetcar Prepares For Historic Main Street Extension Grand Opening

The KC Streetcar Authority has announced exciting plans for the Main Street Extension grand opening celebration on Friday, October 24, 2025.

This highly anticipated event will mark a new chapter in Kansas City’s transit history, expanding access and connectivity for thousands of residents and visitors.

The celebration kicks off with a public ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Plaza stop, followed by immediate access for passengers to ride the extended line. To accommodate crowds, 11 streetcars will be running throughout opening weekend.

Community Celebrations Planned

The KC Streetcar Authority is hosting two major community events to honor the milestone:

  • Friday, October 24 (5–9 p.m.) – A celebration at the UMKC stop, featuring live bands, food trucks, and local vendors.
  • Saturday, October 25 (12–9 p.m.) – A family-friendly festival at Murray Davis Park, near Westport Road and Main Street, with performances by the Stone Lion Puppets and Pythons drill team.

Executive Director Tom Gerend emphasized the importance of the extension:

“It’s a big milestone for Kansas City. It’s a generational reconnection for our community. This is going down in the history books. Come be a part of history.”

Art and Local Businesses Join the Celebration

To commemorate the event, the Kansas City Art Institute partnered with the Streetcar Authority to create a special poster. Sam Morgan’s design was selected and will be available as a free giveaway at the celebrations.

Nearby businesses are also preparing. Main Street Tavern owner Mirella Welsh, whose bar sits between two new stops, is planning her own celebration. She hopes the opening will drive more foot traffic and energy to Midtown.

Service Details and Route Expansion

The Main Street Extension adds 3.5 miles to the KC Streetcar route, stretching from Union Station to 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard. With this new section, service will also begin earlier at 5 a.m.

The extension is part of a long-term plan:

  • The original downtown line opened in 2016.
  • The Berkley Riverfront extension is already scheduled to open in 2026.

The Main Street project has been in the works since 2017, with an estimated cost of $350 million.
