A major employer in town is a U.S. Department of Energy lab, which quietly conducts mysterious scientific experiments. Hawkins has witnessed:

But the truth is darker: the town sits atop a tear between Hawkins and the Upside Down, a destructive alternate dimension.

What Lies Beneath: The Upside Down
Season 1 centered on the disappearance of Will Byers, who was taken by the Demogorgon, a monstrous being from the Upside Down.
