Kansas City police responded to an uncommon hit-and-run Saturday evening — not because the suspect drove away, but because the individuals involved were picked up and taken from the crash scene, prompting officers to track them down nearby.
How the Crash Happened
Collision at 43rd Street and Euclid Avenue
According to the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), the incident took place around 6:30 p.m. on December 6. A white Toyota Prius was making a left turn onto Euclid Avenue from eastbound 43rd Street when the crash occurred.
Ford Edge Attempts Reckless Pass
Police say a white Ford Edge, traveling the same direction behind the Prius, crossed over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic while attempting to speed past the turning vehicle. The maneuver failed, causing the Ford to strike the Prius.
The impact forced the Ford off the roadway, where it collided with a wooden light pole and a metal sign before flipping over and coming to rest.
Occupants Leave the Scene After Being Picked Up
KCPD reported that the Ford’s driver and three passengers — all under 18 — did not stay at the location. Instead, someone arrived, picked them up, and took them away before officers reached the scene.
Police later located all four individuals at a residence near 42nd Street and Agnes Avenue.
Injuries and Medical Response
Paramedics transported the Ford’s driver to the hospital with critical injuries, while the three juvenile passengers were taken in for non-life-threatening injuries. All four are currently listed in stable condition.
The Toyota Prius driver was unharmed in the crash.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are now working to determine whether the Ford’s driver was impaired at the time of the collision, which may have contributed to the reckless driving behavior.
The unusual hit-and-run incident in Kansas City raises several questions about reckless driving, possible impairment, and the decision by those involved to leave the scene after being picked up.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, and officers were able to locate all individuals shortly after the crash. The investigation remains active as authorities work to understand exactly what led to the dangerous chain of events.
