Driver Escapes After Deadly Kansas Crash Claims Life of 26-Year-Old Man

A deadly traffic collision in Seward County, Kansas, claimed the life of a 26-year-old man early Monday morning, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

Incident Occurred on U.S. Highway 54

Authorities said the crash took place shortly after 6 a.m. on U.S. Highway 54, just east of County Road 9. The roadway was the site of a two-vehicle collision involving a pickup truck and another vehicle that has not yet been identified.

Details of the Vehicles Involved

KHP reports that a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, driven eastbound by Bradley Patton, a resident of Liberal, Kansas, drifted across the fog line and onto the eastbound shoulder. The pickup then struck a stopped vehicle on the shoulder of the highway.

Second Vehicle Flees the Scene

Investigators say the second vehicle left the scene before law enforcement was notified of the crash. As of now, authorities have not identified the driver or the vehicle involved and continue to investigate the hit-and-run aspect of the incident.

Victim Not Wearing a Seat Belt

According to KHP, Patton was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. He sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

This tragic incident underscores the dangers of roadway departures and the critical importance of seat belt use. Authorities are continuing efforts to locate the unidentified vehicle involved, while urging drivers to remain alert, stay within lane boundaries, and always use proper safety restraints to reduce the risk of fatal injuries.
