MCPHERSON, Kan. — Alongside doctors, nurses, and patients at the McPherson Center for Health, another group plays an important role each school day: high school interns gaining firsthand healthcare experience.
From Student Intern to Future Nurse
Aspyn Holm now works at the hospital while attending nursing school, but her journey began as a high school intern. Through the program, she discovered that her initial career interests were not set in stone.
“I originally thought obstetrics was the path for me, but that changed,” Holm shared. “After spending time in different departments, I realized the emergency room is where my passion is.”
Today, she serves as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and medical technician, crediting the internship with helping shape her career direction.
Current Interns Explore Their Future
For current intern Dulce Martinez, the experience has been eye-opening and motivating. Being immersed in a real hospital setting has strengthened her confidence about pursuing nursing as a career.
“I know I’m heading toward a bright future in nursing,” Martinez said. “This experience makes me even more excited about what’s ahead.”
How the Internship Program Works
The internship is offered during students’ senior year and lasts one semester. Each term is limited to eight participants, ensuring meaningful, hands-on exposure. Interns spend two class periods every school day at the hospital, allowing them to closely observe and participate in medical environments.
According to Alex Specht from McPherson High School, students return energized by what they’ve experienced.
“They’re always talking about what they saw or did—watching a birth, stepping into an operating room, or helping draw blood,” Specht explained. “They’re genuinely excited about the opportunities they’re given.”
Supporting the Future of Rural Healthcare
Hospital leaders see the program as an investment in the local community. Jamie Hicks of McPherson Center for Health emphasized the long-term goal behind the initiative.
“We care deeply about rural healthcare,” Hicks said. “Our hope is that these students will finish their education and choose to come back home to serve this community.”
Advice for Students Considering an Internship
Holm encourages students entering the program to stay open-minded.
“Be willing to try things you never thought you’d enjoy,” she advised. “You might discover a passion you didn’t know you had.”

McPherson High School offers internships across a wide range of industries beyond healthcare. Students can explore hands-on learning in areas such as welding, agriculture, construction, and accounting, helping them make informed decisions about life after graduation.
