Second Teen Dies After Apartment Shooting As Police Investigation Continues

A second teenager has died from injuries sustained in a deadly apartment shooting, while police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities confirmed that no criminal charges had been filed as of Sunday morning.

The victims were identified by the Kansas City Police Department as 17-year-old Rontez Donahue and 18-year-old Dion Charles Marshall Sims-Bey. Another juvenile was also injured during the shooting but is expected to survive.

Officers Respond To Shooting Report

Police officers were called to the area near East 93rd Street and Old Santa Fe Road shortly after 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 11.

When officers arrived, witnesses directed them toward a nearby apartment building. Inside the building, authorities discovered Donahue suffering from a serious gunshot wound.

Emergency responders immediately attempted life-saving treatment. Despite their efforts, Donahue was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police department publicly confirmed the teenager’s identity on Sunday, June 14, which would have been his 18th birthday.

Two More Victims Found Inside Apartment

Investigators found two additional shooting victims inside the apartment.

Sims-Bey was discovered with life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. A second juvenile, described as being older than 16, suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Police later announced that Sims-Bey died at the hospital on Saturday, making him the second fatality connected to the shooting.

Authorities have not released updated information about the condition of the surviving juvenile. The person’s identity has also been withheld because of their age.

Man Taken Into Custody

A man who was found at the scene was taken into police custody pending further investigation.

However, investigators said no charges had been filed as of late Sunday morning. Police have not clarified whether the detained man remains in custody or whether he is considered a suspect in the case.

Authorities have also not released information about a possible weapon, additional suspects or the events that may have occurred before the shooting.

Motive Remains Unknown

The motive behind the deadly shooting remains unclear. Detectives have not disclosed whether the victims knew one another or whether the incident resulted from an argument, targeted attack or other circumstances.

Investigators are continuing to collect evidence, review available surveillance footage and interview potential witnesses.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area or has information about the shooting to contact investigators.

The deaths of Donahue and Sims-Bey have left two families grieving as authorities work to determine what led to the shooting.

With no charges filed and several questions still unanswered, the investigation remains active. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
