Suspect Arrested After Man Found Fatally Shot Inside Car

Police have identified a 59-year-old man who died after being discovered with a gunshot wound inside his vehicle in downtown Wichita.

Authorities have also arrested a 56-year-old man on suspicion of first-degree murder as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The victim was identified as Stevie Lee Young. Police said he was found seriously injured inside his car on Sunday morning and later died at a hospital.

Officers Find Wounded Man Inside Vehicle

Wichita police officers responded to a reported shooting with injuries at approximately 11:44 a.m. on Sunday.

When officers arrived in the 400 block of North Market, they found Young inside his vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Despite efforts to save him, Young was pronounced dead at approximately 2:30 p.m., according to information released by police.

The area where Young was discovered was secured as officers began collecting evidence and speaking with people who may have witnessed suspicious activity.

Shooting Believed To Have Happened Blocks Away

Investigators determined that Young was not shot in the exact location where officers found him.

Police believe the shooting occurred in the 300 block of North Topeka, located several blocks from the North Market area where Young was discovered inside his car.

Authorities have not explained how Young travelled from the suspected shooting location to the place where he was eventually found. It also remains unclear whether he was driving the vehicle when he was wounded or whether another person may have been present.

Detectives canvassed the downtown area and interviewed potential witnesses as they worked to establish a timeline of events.

Police Identify And Arrest Suspect

Information gathered during the investigation helped officers identify a possible suspect, according to the police department.

Authorities later located and arrested a 56-year-old man in the 2100 block of North Wellington Place. He was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder.

The suspect’s identity has not been publicly released because he had not been formally charged by the District Attorney’s Office at the time of the announcement.

An arrest on suspicion of a crime does not represent a conviction. Prosecutors will review the evidence collected by investigators before deciding whether formal criminal charges should be filed.

Motive Has Not Been Released

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting or explained whether Young and the arrested man knew each other.

Investigators have also not released details about what may have happened immediately before the gunfire. Information regarding the weapon involved or whether a firearm was recovered has not been made public.

Detectives are continuing to review evidence, interview witnesses and investigate Young’s movements before he was found.

The fatal shooting remains under active investigation as police work to determine what led to Young’s death.

Anyone with information that could assist detectives is encouraged to call investigators at 316-268-4407. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
