A man was arrested Sunday morning after a reported domestic violence incident led to a barricade situation at a home, according to police.
Wichita police said officers were called just before 6 a.m. to the 200 block of North Gordon after receiving a domestic violence report. The incident involved a woman and a 17-year-old girl, both of whom were able to escape once officers arrived at the scene.
Police Respond To Domestic Violence Call
According to investigators, the situation began earlier Sunday morning when a man arrived at a residence in the area and asked to see a 17-year-old girl.
A woman inside the home reportedly told him the girl was not there and said he needed to leave. Police said the woman threatened to call authorities, and the man then broke down the door of the home.
After entering the residence, the man allegedly assaulted the woman.
Teen Also Assaulted, Police Say
Authorities said the 17-year-old later returned to the home and was also assaulted by the man.
Police said the woman and the teenager attempted to escape, but the man allegedly pulled out a gun and prevented them from leaving. The situation remained active until officers arrived.
Once police reached the scene, the woman and the 17-year-old were able to get out of the home safely.
Suspect Barricades Inside Home
After the victims escaped, police said the man barricaded himself inside the residence.
Because of the nature of the incident and the report that a firearm was involved, SWAT officers and crisis negotiators were called to the scene. Authorities then began working to resolve the standoff safely.
Police did not immediately release the suspect’s name or the full list of recommended charges.
Tactical Drone Used During Negotiations
During the response, police used a new R10 tactical drone to help locate the man inside the home.
According to police, the drone was able to enter the residence and find the man hiding in a bedroom. Officers were also able to communicate with him through pre-recorded messages played from the drone.
The use of the drone allowed officers to gather information while reducing the risk to responding personnel during the barricade situation.
Man Surrenders To Officers
After negotiations, the man surrendered outside the home and was taken into custody.
Police said the arrest happened without further reported injury. Officials did not immediately provide details about whether a firearm was recovered from the residence.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and the case will be presented to the district attorney for possible charges.
Prior Domestic Violence History Reported
Police said investigators learned the man has a previous history of domestic violence involving the 17-year-old girl.
That information is expected to be included as part of the case review. Prosecutors will determine what formal charges, if any, are filed based on the evidence gathered by police.
The Sunday morning domestic violence call ended with the arrest of a barricaded man after SWAT officers, crisis negotiators and a tactical drone were used at the scene.
The woman and the 17-year-old involved were able to escape, and police said the case will now be forwarded to the district attorney for review.
