In response to soaring egg prices, The Wooden Spoon, a cherished breakfast spot in Overland Park, Kansas, has embarked on an innovative solution raising its own chickens.

This initiative aims to stabilize egg costs and ensure a consistent supply for their patrons.​

For over 14 years, The Wooden Spoon has prided itself on offering quality breakfast dishes. However, recent fluctuations in egg prices have posed significant challenges.

Owner Tina Yake remarked that this year’s price volatility was unprecedented, prompting the restaurant to adjust its menu pricing to reflect current market rates. ​

Initiative to Raise Own Chickens

To mitigate the impact of fluctuating egg prices, The Wooden Spoon has partnered with Flyer Farms to raise chickens. Yake estimates that a minimum of 350 chickens are needed to meet the egg requirements for their two locations.

This move not only ensures a steady egg supply but also aligns with the restaurant’s commitment to freshness and sustainability. ​

Legislative Efforts to Support Poultry Farmers

Recognizing the broader challenges faced by poultry farmers, U.S. Representative Sharice Davids is advocating for legislative solutions.

She introduced the Healthy Poultry Assistance and Indemnification Act, aiming to provide financial relief to farmers affected by avian flu outbreaks and stabilize grocery prices for consumers. ​
