The tragic murder of Father Arul Carasala, a beloved Kansas Catholic priest, took place intentionally and with premeditation, according to prosecutors.
Gary Hermesch, 66, from Tulsa, Oklahoma, was arrested and remains in custody at the Nemaha County Jail following the priest’s death last week.
The Incident
Father Carasala, aged 57, was discovered at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, Kansas, after responding to a 911 call reporting shots fired.
Police found him outside the rectory suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on Thursday afternoon. Despite life-saving efforts from Seneca EMS, Carasala tragically passed away at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital.
Charges Against Gary Hermesch
Hermesch, who is currently facing first-degree murder charges, is being held on a $1 million bond.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has confirmed that the murder was carried out with intent and premeditation.
According to Nemaha County Attorney Brad Lippert, the charges reflect the intentional nature of the crime.

Kris Anderson, the director of religious education for the parish, shared that the suspect, described as an older man, approached Father Carasala and shot him three times.
Father Brian Schieber, a vicar general for the Archdiocese of Kansas City, expressed disbelief and grief over the shooting. He stated, “We’re all still in shock. This is small-town America, and Father Arul was such a beloved pastor in Seneca, Kansas. He’s been serving the community for over 13 years.”
Schieber described Father Arul as a true shepherd who was deeply connected to his congregation, often baptizing, officiating weddings and funerals, and offering spiritual guidance to the sick. He was known for his wisdom, compassion, and pastoral care, making him beloved by everyone in the community.
The Shooting’s Impact on the Community
Schieber referred to the act as a senseless act of violence and emphasized that there is currently no known motive for the crime. He also expressed compassion for the suspect, stating, “We are praying for the person that killed Father Arul as well, and thank you all for your prayers.”
Law Enforcement Response
At approximately 3 p.m. local time on Thursday, Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Seneca Police Department officers responded to the 911 call about shots being fired at the church rectory.
Upon arrival, they found Father Carasala outside, severely injured. Seneca EMS quickly transported him to the hospital, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his wounds.
