Kansas Turnpike Authority To Begin Major Redevelopment Of Emporia Service Area

The Kansas Turnpike Authority is preparing to begin a major redevelopment project at its Emporia service area. The project will include demolition of the current structures and construction of a new modern facility designed to better serve travelers using the Kansas Turnpike.

KTA says the work will begin later this summer and will be completed in phases so customers can continue to access fuel during construction.

Emporia Service Area Set For Reconstruction

The redevelopment will replace the existing Emporia service area with a newly designed facility. Two current structures at the site are expected to be removed by the end of the construction process.

According to KTA, the goal is to create a more efficient and comfortable stop for drivers. The upgraded site will include improved layouts, new amenities and services that better match the needs of modern travelers.

The project is part of a broader effort to improve the travel experience along the Kansas Turnpike.

Fuel Access Will Remain Available

Because the Emporia service area is an important stop for drivers, construction will be handled in phases. KTA said this approach is intended to maintain fuel access for customers while work continues.

Phased construction will help reduce disruption for travelers who rely on the service area during long trips. More specific construction details and traffic impacts are expected to be shared later this summer.

New Food, Fuel And Travel Services Planned

The new facility will include a food establishment, fuel options and other traveler services. KTA says the updated service area will be designed with long-term operational efficiency in mind.

The improvements are expected to make the stop more convenient for drivers, families, commercial travelers and others using the turnpike.

While full design details have not yet been released, the redevelopment is being described as a reimagined version of the current Emporia service area.

Taco John’s And Subway To Close

As part of the redevelopment, the Taco John’s and Subway currently located at the service area will permanently close on July 7, 2026. After closing, the spaces will be prepared for demolition.

KTA said tenants and project partners are working with employees to communicate how the closures and redevelopment will affect them.

The food closures mark one of the first visible steps in the transition from the existing service area to the new facility.

Project Partners Announced

Several partners are involved in the Emporia redevelopment project. Tessere, Inc. of Wichita is serving as the architect, while Dondlinger & Sons Construction Co., Inc., also based in Wichita, is the construction manager.

Fast N’ Friendly, LLC of Lenexa will serve as the service operator for the facility.

KTA CEO Steve Hewitt said the project reflects the authority’s commitment to providing a safe, reliable and comfortable experience for every customer.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority’s redevelopment of the Emporia service area will bring major changes for travelers, including a modern facility, improved amenities, food service, fuel access and updated layouts.

While construction will begin later this summer and continue in phases, KTA says fuel access will remain available during the work. More updates, including design details and construction timelines, are expected in the coming months.
