In a thrilling display of skill and determination, the Salina Central Mustangs clinched a spot in the state playoffs by defeating both Emporia and crosstown rivals Salina South in the Class 5A regional softball championship. 

The victories mark a significant milestone for the Mustangs, who are making their first state tournament appearance in over two decades.

Semifinal 1: Salina Central vs. Emporia – Dominant Pitching Leads the Way

The Mustangs began their playoff journey facing Emporia in the semifinals. Freshman pitcher Sophia Johnson, making her postseason debut, delivered an outstanding performance. 

After navigating early pressure, Johnson settled in to retire 10 consecutive batters, culminating in a complete-game shutout. She allowed only two hits and struck out eight over seven innings.

Offensively, Salina Central was relentless, amassing 15 hits. Junior Ellie Riekhof led the charge, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. The Mustangs secured an 8-0 victory, setting the stage for a championship showdown.

Semifinal 2: Salina South vs. Newton – Offensive Explosion

In the other semifinal, Salina South faced Newton for the third time in a week. Despite a modest start, the Cougars erupted in the fourth inning, scoring 11 runs on eight hits. Senior Macy Yost delivered the decisive blow with a three-run triple, leading South to a commanding 16-1 win via the run rule.

Regional Championship: Salina Central vs. Salina South – A Historic Victory

The championship game at Salina South High School was a highly anticipated matchup between the Mustangs and the Cougars. With a state playoff berth on the line, both teams brought their best to the field.

Salina Central’s offense ignited early, with Ellie Riekhof launching a three-run homer in the first inning. Senior pitcher Valerie VanZant contributed both on the mound and at the plate, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning. The Mustangs continued to apply pressure, scoring in six of the seven innings.

Salina South fought valiantly, with Macy Yost hitting home runs in the fourth and seventh innings. However, a diving catch by junior Bailey Bruce in center field sealed a 15-8 victory for Salina Central. 

The win not only secured the regional championship but also ended a 20-year state tournament drought for the Mustangs.
