The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has launched an inquiry into an officer-involved shooting that took place in Kansas City, Kansas, during the early hours of Monday morning.
At approximately 2:45 a.m., local officers were dispatched following a 911 call about a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, they interviewed the woman who placed the call and were then directed to a storage unit in the 200 block of North 78th Street, where the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Timothy Cella, was located.
Confrontation at the Storage Facility
According to initial reports, officers spotted Cella inside the storage unit through a large window. They attempted to negotiate and issued multiple commands for him to exit the unit.
However, Cella refused to comply and reportedly made verbal threats toward the officers.
During the standoff, officers believed Cella was brandishing a firearm, prompting the dispatch of additional law enforcement personnel.
Escalation and Use of Force
Around 3:45 a.m., officers again saw Cella raise what they assumed to be a weapon. Believing they were in imminent danger, six officers discharged their firearms, hitting Cella several times.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived shortly after and transported him to a local hospital. He remains in critical but stable condition.
Upon further investigation, the object Cella allegedly raised was determined to be a butane torch, not a gun.
KBI’s Role and Ongoing Investigation
The Kansas City Police Department requested the involvement of the KBI shortly after the shooting. As per protocol, the KBI is conducting an independent investigation to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the shooting.
Preliminary findings are based on initial evidence, including statements from involved officers, witnesses, and medical personnel. These early details are not final conclusions, as a full review and forensic analysis could take several weeks.
Once completed, the investigation’s results will be handed over to the Wyandotte County District Attorney, who will decide if any criminal charges should be filed.
