Ellie Perrigo, currently serving as a Player Personnel Assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs, has always been passionate about football.
Her journey began as a young fan cheering for the Carolina Panthers with her dad. Initially aiming to become a sideline reporter, Perrigo discovered her calling behind the scenes during college at the University of Miami.
An unexpected opportunity to assist ESPN during the 2019 Super Bowl in Miami ignited her professional path.
Acting as a local runner, she realized her potential in football operations, which later led her to work various assignments like Monday Night Football and the NFL Draft—all while handling roles in the university’s athletic department and completing internships.
Climbing the Ladder Through Internships and Dedication
Perrigo’s first official NFL experience came during her senior year when she interned with the Kansas City Chiefs’ events team. Her persistence and relationship-building paid off as she later secured a seasonal role with the team post-graduation.
Through this, she connected with General Manager Brett Veach, who invited her to observe film sessions and attend draft meetings.
Eventually, she accepted a position with the Kansas City Current in women’s soccer but returned to the Chiefs in July 2023 as the Norma Hunt Player Personnel Fellow—a decision that required her to leave a full-time job for a less-certain opportunity. That leap of faith resulted in a full-time hire the following summer.
What Her Current Role Involves
In her day-to-day role, Perrigo contributes to both college and pro scouting. She evaluates players from multiple schools, creates in-depth reports, and manages depth charts.
During recruitment periods, she escorts visiting players, compiles character assessments, and assists in determining roster compatibility.
During training camp, Perrigo not only monitors practice but also contributes to ranking positional groups. She serves as a mentor for interns and fellows, reflecting the collaborative environment she values.
Adapting and Growing Within the NFL
Perrigo describes her transition from event management to player personnel as natural and rewarding. Her contributions, while not directly tied to gameplay, make her feel connected to the team’s success.
The most challenging aspect of her role? Staying organized and focused while adapting to daily changes and urgent tasks—an essential skill in NFL operations.
Looking ahead, she aspires to become an area scout, focusing on evaluating college athletes on the road and contributing further to the Chiefs’ talent acquisition strategy.
Ellie Perrigo’s story is a testament to resilience, passion, and professional courage. Her progression from student volunteer to full-time NFL personnel staff highlights the increasing inclusion of women in professional football’s inner workings.
Through dedication, adaptability, and self-belief, Perrigo not only claimed a seat at the table—she’s helping shape the future of the game.
