Unidentified Body Found by Park Staff: Authorities are conducting an investigation at Sedgwick County Park after a body was discovered Tuesday afternoon.
The initial report was received at 1:14 p.m. by emergency dispatchers, who were informed that a body had been located within the park boundaries.
Park Worker Alerts Authorities
According to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, a park employee made the 911 call after coming across what appeared to be human remains in a dense, grassy section of the park.
The body was found in the northwest area of the park, close to 21st Street North and Ridge Road.
Authorities Respond to Isolated Campsite
Emergency personnel from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Fire Department, and Sedgwick County EMS responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, they discovered a deceased individual near a solitary campsite, situated just outside a tent.
Due to the severely decomposed condition of the body, investigators have not yet been able to determine the person’s age or gender.
The extent of decomposition has also made it difficult to identify any external signs of trauma.
Ongoing Identification and Autopsy Efforts
Deputies found personal items in close proximity to the body. The sheriff’s office has confirmed that it is collaborating with the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office to achieve a positive identification.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death, and to help estimate the time of death.
Connection to Missing Person Case Being Explored
Investigators are also examining a missing person report filed in the area. However, they emphasized that it is currently too soon to establish any definitive link between that case and the remains discovered.
