For the first time in over 30 years, the Missouri Symphony made a long-awaited return to Thespian Hall in Boonville, Missouri—a venue steeped in 160 years of musical and cultural history.
This iconic performance marked the kickoff of the Symphony’s 2025 summer tour, bringing classical and cinematic favorites to smaller communities across mid-Missouri.
Thespian Hall: A Mid-Missouri Cultural Gem
Thespian Hall, one of the oldest operating theaters west of the Mississippi, offers performers and audiences a rare opportunity to connect through history. Wilbur Lin, music director of the Missouri Symphony, acknowledged the honor of playing in such a storied venue.
“We’re continuing the long tradition of welcoming great musicians to this hall,” Lin said. “Seeing the names backstage—legendary conductors, orchestras, soloists—it’s humbling to be a part of that legacy.”
Expanding Access to Classical Music
While the Missouri Symphony (MOSY) has called Columbia home for 55 years, its leadership is now prioritizing accessibility by performing in underserved towns. Executive Director Trent Nash emphasized the importance of reaching smaller communities that don’t regularly have access to live orchestral music.
“It’s not just about Columbia,” Nash explained. “We’re excited to share the joy of classical music with those who rarely get the chance to experience it live.”
Slowing Down in a Fast-Paced World
Beyond the music itself, Wilbur Lin spoke about the emotional and cultural value of pausing daily distractions. In a time when digital devices dominate our attention, Lin believes attending a live performance is a rare chance to unplug and be fully present.
“We’re gradually losing the experience of sitting still, listening deeply, and simply being,” he said. “That’s what orchestral music offers—and why I want to bring it to as many people as possible.”
A Night of Movie Magic
The performance at Thespian Hall featured a nostalgic lineup of cinematic favorites, including selections from:
- “Back to the Future”
- “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”
- “Jurassic Park”
- And other timeless classics
The concert lasted approximately 90 minutes, with a 20-minute intermission for attendees to relax and reflect on the music.
