Comcast has officially completed a two-year broadband expansion project in rural Paola and Hillsdale, Kansas, connecting around 4,000 homes and businesses to its Xfinity internet and television services. Community leaders gathered in Miami County to celebrate this milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
According to Jennifer Dameron, Comcast’s director of external affairs, the project—fully funded by Comcast—was initiated in 2023 to help close the digital divide in underserved areas.
“Internet is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity,” Dameron emphasized.
Filling the Digital Gaps
Miami County previously had only one limited provider, but Comcast’s arrival brings consistency and broader access. Economic Development Director Janet McRae pointed out that this project allows unincorporated areas to connect to the digital economy.
Beth Waddle, co-founder of My Father’s House, a shelter building affordable tiny homes, shared that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted just how essential internet access is for rural families. She noted that social services, healthcare, and job applications all now require reliable internet.
“Comcast’s expansion empowers people on their journey to independence,” Waddle said.
Multi-State Expansion Underway
In March 2025, Comcast revealed it was also connecting over 11,000 homes and businesses across six Missouri communities: Concordia, Harrisonville, Higginsville, Lexington, Napoleon, and Wellington. This effort will cover 300+ miles and is expected to finish by 2027.
Comcast has invested $100 million in rural Missouri over the last three years and broke ground in Harrisonville earlier this year. Dameron said the company is focused on doubling its footprint in Missouri.
Economic Boost Ahead of 2026 World Cup
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to Kansas City, rural counties are preparing to capitalize on global exposure. McRae highlighted how enhanced broadband enables small businesses to reach world markets and expand their e-commerce operations.
“Connectivity opens doors for both remote work and tourism-related growth,” McRae said.
Corporate Support and Community Impact
Comcast donated $2,500 to My Father’s House as part of its partnership with rural development efforts. Waddle praised the gesture, saying it reflects genuine support without conditions.
“I’m thankful for a community that embraces meaningful progress,” she added.
Comcast’s broadband expansion in Kansas and Missouri marks a major step toward bridging the digital divide in rural areas. By bringing high-speed internet to thousands of underserved homes and businesses, the project not only supports economic development but also strengthens community resilience ahead of international events like the World Cup.
