As summer temperatures soar, the Salvation Army is stepping up to support local residents struggling to stay cool.
In partnership with Evergy, the organization will distribute more than 2,900 fans to Sedgwick County residents on Wednesday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army Koch Center.
The initiative aims to protect vulnerable community members from extreme heat, one of the deadliest weather-related threats in the United States, according to the National Weather Service.
Extreme Heat: A Hidden Health Hazard
Extreme temperatures can result in severe health complications, including heatstroke, heart attacks, and neurological symptoms.
These conditions often occur when the body reaches a temperature of 104°F or higher, leading to hyperthermia.
Under normal conditions, sweating helps regulate body temperature. However, during prolonged exposure to extreme heat, the body’s cooling mechanisms become overwhelmed, increasing the risk of life-threatening symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
How to Stay Safe in the Heat: Precautionary Tips
Residents are urged to take proactive steps to prevent heat-related illness. Here are several effective strategies:
- Apply sunscreen: Use SPF 30 or higher and wear light-colored, sun-protective clothing.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing: Avoid heavy or tight-fitting clothes.
- Avoid peak heat hours: Limit outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., especially when temperatures exceed 104°F.
- Never leave anyone in a parked car: Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise 20°F in just 10 minutes.
- Cool off with cold showers or swimming: These help regulate body temperature quickly.
- Use extra caution: If you suffer from heart disease, respiratory conditions, or other health concerns, limit your time outdoors during heatwaves.
Priority for Fans: Seniors, Disabled, and Low-Income Households
The Salvation Army emphasizes that priority for free fans will be given to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and residents who cannot afford to buy a fan on their own.
Due to high demand, supplies are limited, and the organization recommends arriving early to ensure access to a fan.
With dangerous heat on the rise, the Salvation Army’s fan distribution event provides a much-needed lifeline for Sedgwick County residents.
By offering relief from the sweltering conditions, the organization continues its mission to serve and protect vulnerable community members during Kansas’ hottest months.
