Emporia Man Receives 10-Year Sentence for DUI Crash That Killed One, Injured Two in Johnson County

A tragic car crash that occurred in Johnson County, Kansas, in May 2024 has now led to a lengthy prison sentence for an Emporia man.

Jason Brumley, 40, has been ordered to serve more than 10 years in prison for his role in the deadly incident.

Details of the Conviction

Brumley was sentenced earlier this month to a total of 122 months behind bars. The charges stemmed from a crash that happened near the Interstate 35 and Sunflower Road junction, situated in the Kansas City metro area.

Brumley had pleaded guilty to the following:

  • One count of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence (DUI)
  • Two counts of aggravated battery

According to court documents and news sources, the aggravated battery charges will run concurrently with the involuntary manslaughter sentence.

This means Brumley will serve all three sentences at the same time, with the involuntary manslaughter count as the controlling sentence.

Crash Recap: Fatality and Severe Injuries

The crash claimed the life of 76-year-old Sherry Pena, who was pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to Pena’s death, two other individuals sustained critical injuries during the accident but were able to survive.

The incident, which involved impaired driving, not only led to a loss of life but also resulted in lasting physical and emotional trauma for the surviving victims and their families.

Legal Consequences and Broader Implications

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the severe consequences associated with driving under the influence.

Brumley’s decade-long sentence underscores how seriously Kansas courts treat such cases, especially when they involve the loss of life and significant bodily harm.

The concurrent sentencing structure, though common in similar cases, still reflects the court’s recognition of multiple victims suffering due to one individual’s negligent actions.

The sentencing of Jason Brumley marks a significant step toward justice for the victims of the tragic May 2024 crash in Johnson County.

With one person deceased and two critically injured, the court’s decision holds Brumley accountable while spotlighting the grave dangers of impaired driving.

As Kansas communities continue to confront the risks posed by DUI offenses, this case will likely remain a strong example of legal accountability.
