Emporia Launches Major Pavement and Street Repair Projects This Week

Emporia residents should expect multiple street closures and improvements over the coming days, as the city initiates extensive pavement repair and street rehabilitation efforts across various neighborhoods.

Temporary Closure at 15th and Prairie for Road Repairs

Beginning Tuesday, the intersection at 15th and Prairie will be closed to eastbound traffic due to ongoing street repair work linked to the 24th and Prairie waterline replacement project.

This closure is expected to remain in effect for the rest of the week.

In connection with this same project, construction has also been occurring on Prairie Street between 12th and 15th, primarily affecting northbound lanes.

However, City Engineer Jim Ubert confirmed that northbound traffic on Prairie is currently open and accessible.

Citywide Street Rehabilitation Program Kicks Off Next Week

Emporia’s Street Rehabilitation Program is set to begin next week and will include improvements to ten key road segments throughout the city.

This program aims to enhance driving conditions and extend the lifespan of heavily traveled streets.

List of Streets Scheduled for Rehabilitation

  • Eighth Avenue from Walnut Street to West Street
  • 18th Avenue from Industrial Road to Prairie Street
  • Cottonwood Street from Second Avenue to the BNSF railroad tracks and from South Avenue to First Avenue
  • East Wilman Court from Rural Street to 18th Avenue
  • Grand Street between Ninth and 12th Streets
  • Soden Road from Commercial Street to the David Traylor Zoo Education Center
  • Sylvan Street from South Avenue to the railroad tracks
  • Trail Ridge Road from Santa Fe Trail Road to 15th Avenue
  • Walnut Street from 12th to 15th Street
  • West Ridge Court from West Ridge Drive to Timmerman Drive

Milling and Overlay Process to Be Implemented

All ten streets listed will first undergo milling, a process that removes the top layer of the existing pavement to prepare the surface for new material.

The overlay phase, which involves placing a fresh layer of asphalt over the milled surface, will occur at a later date to be announced.

Emporia’s proactive investment in street infrastructure will bring necessary upgrades to some of the city’s most used roadways.

While temporary traffic disruptions are expected, these improvements are vital for maintaining road safety and smooth transportation in the long run.

Residents are advised to stay alert for detours and updates from city officials as work progresses.
