Matt Fowler has been named the Interim Director of Visit Emporia, taking over the responsibilities previously held by Lelan Dains.
Dains stepped down in November to lead Emporia Spanish Speakers, leaving the position vacant for several months.
Fowler, a lifelong Emporia resident, brings with him a wealth of local experience spanning journalism at the Emporia Gazette, community involvement in gravel cycling, and a role with Emporia Public Schools.
Stepping Up During a Transitional Phase
Recognizing the gap in leadership, Fowler approached Jeanine McKenna, CEO of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, and volunteered to fill the interim role until a permanent director is chosen.
His appointment comes at a pivotal moment as Visit Emporia undergoes a review of its operational contract.
A Renewed Focus on Marketing Emporia
As interim director, Fowler aims to boost Emporia’s visibility through strategic marketing initiatives.
By leveraging social media, digital platforms, and traditional print advertising, he seeks to reinforce Emporia’s identity and appeal, particularly among nearby residents.
“We want to attract new visitors, but it’s equally important to stay connected with those who are 15 to 50 miles away—people who visit regularly and bring others with them,” Fowler explained.
Planning for the Future Beyond 2025
Despite his interim status, Fowler understands that decisions made now will influence events for years to come.
Major events like Unbound Gravel and the PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships require long-term coordination and promotion.
Fowler is actively working with event organizers and partners to ensure these events remain a staple of Emporia’s annual calendar.
“It’s essential that these organizations know Emporia is ready and committed, especially as they look ahead to 2026 and 2027,” Fowler emphasized.
Uncertainty Around the Visitor Bureau Contract
Fowler’s leadership comes at a time when the Emporia Visitor Bureau’s management contract is under review.
Since 1982, the Emporia Chamber of Commerce has operated the bureau, but Emporia Main Street and the City of Emporia are now also in contention to take over.
The outcome will shape the future of Visit Emporia’s operations.
Building a Lasting Brand for Emporia
Regardless of who manages the contract, Fowler believes the priority must be creating a strong, recognizable brand that continues to attract visitors.
“My goal is to help Visit Emporia stay focused on its mission while city leaders determine the path forward,” he stated.
Looking Ahead: The 2026 Community Guide
Under Fowler’s direction, Visit Emporia is already working on its 2026 community guide.
Highlighting what makes Emporia special, Fowler points to the quality of local schools, tight-knit communities, and central location in Kansas.
“Emporia is an incredible place to promote,” he said. “We’re fortunate to have outstanding schools and a great location that make this community truly unique.”
Matt Fowler’s interim leadership at Visit Emporia marks a critical chapter for the organization. With a clear focus on marketing, event coordination, and brand-building, Fowler is ensuring that Emporia remains visible and attractive to visitors both near and far.
As the city deliberates the future of its visitor bureau, Fowler’s work provides a solid foundation for long-term growth and community engagement.
