The U.S. military has confirmed the death of another American soldier, who was killed in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from a downed Iranian drone.
In a statement released on Sunday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the incident occurred on July 18. A second service member sustained minor injuries during the operation. The identities of both soldiers have not been released.
Military Casualties Continue to Rise
The latest fatality brings the number of U.S. service members killed since the U.S. and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28 to 17.
CENTCOM also confirmed that two American troops were killed in Iranian strikes in Jordan on Friday, while another service member went missing. Authorities have since recovered unidentified remains from the area and are conducting forensic examinations to determine the individual’s identity.
Conflict Between the U.S. and Iran Intensifies
The announcement came as the United States carried out its eighth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, while Tehran responded by launching missiles and drones targeting U.S. military assets in the Gulf.
Iran’s Shahed one-way attack drones, which are relatively inexpensive to manufacture, have become a significant part of the conflict. Military analysts note that the interceptor systems used to destroy these drones are far more costly and are not always successful.
Fresh Attacks Reported Across the Region
Iranian media reported additional U.S. strikes near Sirik, Shadegan, and Abadan. Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization also accused the U.S. of attacking a nuclear power plant under construction in Darkhovin. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it is reviewing reports of the incident.
In retaliation, Iran claimed responsibility for drone attacks targeting Kuwait’s Al-Adiri camp and Ali Al Salem Air Base. Kuwait also reported damage to a desalination plant following another strike.
Meanwhile, Bahrain said its air defenses intercepted an Iranian attack, while Jordan reported shooting down three Iranian missiles and formally protested to Iran over recent attacks.
