Small businesses located along the Delmar corridor that experienced damage from the May 16 tornado are now eligible to apply for $5,000 recovery grants, thanks to an initiative by the Delmar Main Street program.
According to Felice McClendon, Executive Director of Delmar Main Street, businesses within the stretch from St. Louis city limits to Taylor Avenue can apply for the funds, which are intended to assist with repairs, restoration, or relocation.
Quick and Flexible Application Process
McClendon emphasized that the online grant application is user-friendly and intentionally designed with minimal restrictions on how recipients can use the money.
“There’s a wide range of needs small businesses face, especially when they’re responsible not just for operations but also for supporting their employees and their families,” she explained.
Grants Distributed on a First-Come, First-Served Basis
The $5,000 grants will be awarded until funding is exhausted, with a first-come, first-served policy. McClendon noted the urgency to act quickly and efficiently, given the unexpected nature of the tornado and its impact on the community.
Community Support Powers the Relief Effort
The funding was made possible in large part by the “Build Back the Block” benefit concert, which raised over $50,000 in donations.
The event drew nearly 1,000 attendees, showcasing the community’s dedication to helping local businesses recover.
McClendon extended her thanks to all contributors, and gave special recognition to Danni Eickenhorst, co-owner of Steve’s Hot Dogs and The Fountain on Delmar, for her instrumental role in organizing the fundraiser.
