Tragic Domestic Violence Incident in West Wichita Mother Fatally Stabbed After Calling 911

A domestic violence incident in west Wichita turned deadly on Thursday when a 27-year-old woman, Sinay Leon-Montoya, was fatally stabbed shortly after placing a distress call to 911.

According to the Wichita Police Department, Leon-Montoya had reached out for help around 2:15 p.m., reporting a disturbance from the 6300 block of West Kellogg Drive.

However, communication challenges arose during the call due to a language barrier, making it difficult for dispatchers to fully understand the urgency of the situation.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Fatal Stabbing

After making the emergency call, Leon-Montoya reportedly left the initial location and returned to her residence at the W. Par Lane apartment complex, located near Central and Ridge Road. It was here, in her home, that the situation escalated fatally.

Responding officers arrived at the apartment around 2:35 p.m., just 20 minutes after the 911 call. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman outside the apartment suffering from a cut or stab wound.

She was immediately transported to the hospital and is currently reported to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Inside the apartment, authorities found Leon-Montoya suffering from multiple stab wounds, along with the 25-year-old suspect, identified as Edward Millan-Volcan.

Leon-Montoya was also taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Children Witnessed the Violence

Tragically, police confirmed that children were present during the incident. Leon-Montoya and Millan-Volcan are believed to have shared children, all of whom were in the apartment at the time of the attack.

Authorities have not disclosed the children’s current custody status, but they were unharmed physically and are being cared for following the traumatic event.

Suspect in Custody with Multiple Charges

Edward Millan-Volcan, the alleged perpetrator, was taken into custody at the scene. Sedgwick County Jail booking records show he has been charged with:

  • First-degree murder
  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • Two counts of aggravated kidnapping
  • Two counts of kidnapping
  • Two counts of aggravated child endangerment

Authorities are continuing their investigation to gather more evidence and determine the timeline and motive behind the brutal act.

The tragic death of Sinay Leon-Montoya sheds light once again on the dangers of domestic violence and the challenges faced by victims, especially when language barriers prevent clear communication during emergencies.

Despite Leon-Montoya’s efforts to seek help, the deadly incident unfolded in front of her children, underscoring the urgent need for more accessible and responsive support systems for vulnerable individuals in domestic abuse situations.
