Ameren Expands Energy Assistance and Cooling Programs for Summer 2025

As summer temperatures continue to rise, Ameren is reminding Missouri and Illinois residents of expanded programs aimed at keeping customers safe, cool, and financially supported.

Starting 2025, the company rolled out enhancements to several energy assistance initiatives, offering increased funding, broader eligibility, and new ways to save on electric bills.

Enhanced Energy Assistance Programs

Ameren has updated several key support programs to help residents manage rising utility costs and remain comfortable during hot weather.

Keeping Cool & Keeping Current

  • Funding has been boosted to $6 million annually, marking a 41% increase.
  • Keeping Cool offers five monthly bill credits of $50 between May and September.
  • Keeping Current provides monthly bill credits ranging from $35 to $90, along with past-due balance forgiveness for customers who make consistent payments.

Weatherization Program

  • Funding has increased to $2 million per year, a 50% boost for electric customers.
  • In 2024, Ameren Missouri added another $1 million to help renters and homeowners upgrade to energy-efficient solutions, cutting energy costs in the long term.

New Start Energy Relief

  • Now open to seniors with past-due balances at risk of public housing eviction, and individuals exiting domestic violence shelters.
  • Offers much-needed support to vulnerable populations during critical transitions.

Expanding Access and Outreach

Joe Solari, Ameren’s VP of customer experience, urged residents to take advantage of the available aid, noting many are unaware they may qualify for multiple assistance programs.

He emphasized applying early through community action agencies, the Ameren website, or by attending in-person outreach events.

In 2024 alone, Ameren Missouri customers received over $37 million in energy assistance through programs like LIHEAP and Ameren’s own initiatives. The utility also collaborates with hundreds of community agencies and nonprofits to host application events across the state.

“These events offer personalized support and raise awareness about what’s available,” added Page Selby, manager of customer advocacy.

Community Donations Making a Difference

Ameren’s Dollar More Program remains a vital lifeline, allowing the public to donate directly to support those in financial hardship. In 2024, over 3,500 households received more than $1.4 million through community-driven contributions.

Tips to Reduce Energy Use and Stay Safe

With summer nearing its peak, Ameren also encourages customers to adopt simple energy-saving habits that can make a big difference during heatwaves:

  • Use fans with your AC to circulate air and raise thermostat settings by 3–4 degrees while staying comfortable.
  • Replace or clean air filters regularly to keep systems efficient and reduce energy waste.
  • Block sunlight using drapes or blinds to cut heat gain indoors by up to one-third.
  • Cook smarter by grilling outdoors or using energy-efficient appliances like slow cookers or air fryers.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust settings, potentially saving $180 per year.
  • Enroll in Budget Billing to even out spikes in monthly utility costs.
  • Locate cooling centers or air-conditioned public spaces if your home becomes too hot.
  • Stay hydrated and practice outdoor safety, wearing light clothing and taking regular shade breaks.

Investing in Grid Reliability During Extreme Heat

Extreme temperatures pose serious health and safety risks,” said Tony Lozano, Ameren Missouri’s director of energy efficiency. “That’s why we’re continually investing in a more resilient and reliable energy grid in Missouri and Illinois.”

Jake Bodi, director of customer operations at Ameren Illinois, added, “We know families are dealing with rising costs, and hot weather only increases the burden. Now is the time to explore your bill management options before the heat becomes overwhelming.”

Ameren’s expanded summer support programs ensure customers across Missouri and Illinois can beat the heat while managing energy costs.

With increased funding, new eligibility options, and personalized help through community events, families can access vital relief.

Customers are encouraged to explore these programs early, stay informed through the Ameren website, and adopt smart energy habits for a safer, cooler summer.
