Ameren Missouri Plans 800MW Gas Plant & Battery Storage in Jefferson County

Ameren Missouri, a division of Ameren Corporation, has officially submitted plans to the Missouri Public Service Commission for the development of a major energy project—an 800-megawatt (MW) simple-cycle natural gas energy facility.

Known as the Big Hollow Energy Center, this project will be constructed in Jefferson County and will mark a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to modernize and balance its energy generation portfolio.

In a key move toward energy resilience, the project will also include Ameren Missouri’s first utility-scale battery storage system.

A Strategic Move for Reliable and Balanced Power

Ameren Missouri’s president and chairman, Mark Birk, emphasized that the initiative is part of a long-term strategy to enhance energy infrastructure for customers while adapting to changing energy demands.

“As we look to the future of energy generation, our focus remains on providing dependable service while planning for increased electricity needs,” Birk stated.

The Big Hollow Energy Center is designed to operate as a reliable backup energy source, similar in function to the company’s Castle Bluff facility.

It will be especially vital during extreme weather events and will support the integration of renewable energy resources into the grid.

Battery Storage: A First for Ameren Missouri

For the first time, Ameren Missouri will deploy large-scale lithium-ion batteries at the site. These batteries, with a capacity of 400 MW, will be charged during periods of energy surplus and activated swiftly during peak demand.

The quick-dispatch capability will help power thousands of homes and enhance grid reliability.

The company’s long-term battery storage roadmap includes:

  • 1,000 MW of battery storage by 2030
  • 1,800 MW of battery storage by 2042

This step is part of Ameren Missouri’s broader commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure and integrating sustainable technologies.

Efficient Use of Existing Infrastructure

Both the gas plant and the battery facility will operate independently but will share the benefit of pre-existing infrastructure on Ameren Missouri-owned property.

The selected site already has access to transmission lines and other utilities, which will help accelerate construction timelines and minimize additional land development.

Ajay Arora, senior vice president and chief development officer at Ameren Missouri, highlighted the importance of strategic location planning:

“To optimize energy delivery, we need not only a mix of generation types but also well-placed facilities throughout the region.”

Local Partnerships and Economic Development

The Big Hollow Energy Center is expected to have a positive economic impact on Jefferson County. Ameren Missouri has been working closely with local officials, including support from Jefferson R-VII School District, emergency services, and economic leaders.

Rob Dixon, senior director of economic, community, and business development at Ameren Missouri, noted that the company is committed to being a collaborative community partner.

Dennis Gannon, Jefferson County Executive, praised the company’s investment:

“This project represents years of partnership and vision. It’s a forward-looking investment that will benefit our economy and community well into the future.”

Ameren Missouri’s proposal for the Big Hollow Energy Center reflects a thoughtful and strategic approach to meeting Missouri’s future energy demands.

With its blend of natural gas generation and advanced battery storage, the project is set to improve energy reliability, support renewable integration, and stimulate local economic growth—all while leveraging existing infrastructure and strong community partnerships.
