A 20-year-old college student, Elsa McGrain, tragically lost her life after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while jogging near Lawrence Regional Airport in Kansas.
Authorities reported that the accident occurred around 6 p.m. on Thursday, but her body remained undiscovered for nearly 10 hours, until a passerby came across the scene at 3:35 a.m. on Friday and notified the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Following an on-site investigation, police confirmed that McGrain died shortly after being hit by a white pickup truck while running in the area.
Suspect Arrested After Fatal Collision
The suspected vehicle, a white pickup truck, was located by authorities soon after releasing photos to the public.
On Sunday, police announced the arrest of William Ray Klingler, 36, in connection with the fatal hit-and-run. He now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and failure to appear, according to reports.
Police allege that Klingler fled the scene immediately after striking McGrain. Court records show he is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.

Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Elsa was a pre-med student at the University of Kansas, expected to graduate in 2026. She was also a dedicated member of the Chi Omega sorority, where she served as house manager on the executive board.
Her sorority sisters posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved sister, Elsa McGrain. Elsa was the kind of person everyone wanted to be—genuine, kind, and full of light.”
The message continued, “She noticed the quiet one in the room, checked in on you whether things were good or bad, and was the loyal friend we all strive to be. She had a gift for making everyone around her feel valued and loved.”
