On Friday morning, a significant crash occurred on the Kansas Turnpike’s northbound bridge over US Highway 50, resulting in extensive damage.
A westbound semi truck carrying an elevated articulated boom attempted to pass under the bridge, causing the boom to strike and damage at least two I-beams on the bridge’s underside, with several other beams also impacted.
The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Newman Regional Health for medical attention.
Traffic Disruptions and Constrictions
Kansas Turnpike Traffic: Following the incident, northbound traffic on the Kansas Turnpike has experienced major disruptions. Currently, there are several restrictions in place:
- Lane Blockage: The outside lane has been closed off.
- Width Restriction: A 12-foot width limit has been implemented.
- Speed Limit: A temporary speed limit of 45 mph has been enforced.
- No Access for Oversized Loads: Until repairs are completed, oversized or overweight vehicles are prohibited from accessing the bridge on the inside lane.
US-50 Traffic: For travelers on US Highway 50, westbound traffic now uses the eastbound lane underneath the damaged bridge, creating head-to-head traffic conditions. These changes remain in effect until further notice, causing potential delays for drivers in both directions.
Repair Plans and Collaboration Efforts
The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) is currently working alongside bridge contractors and design consultants to assess the damage and formulate a comprehensive repair plan.
However, both the KTA and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) have not yet determined how long the repairs will take.
What Drivers Should Expect
- Delays: Motorists should prepare for significant delays.
- Alternate Routes: Drivers are advised to plan alternative routes to avoid the construction zone.
- Increased Travel Time: Expect additional travel time, especially when using the affected highways.
The Kansas Turnpike bridge over US Highway 50 remains closed for repairs following a crash that caused significant damage.
While temporary traffic restrictions are in place, authorities are actively working on a repair plan. Drivers should remain prepared for ongoing disruptions and allow extra time for their commutes.
