May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, and Kansas City is commemorating the occasion with a variety of cultural events that highlight the traditions, stories, and achievements of AAPI communities.
Originally recognized as a 10-day celebration starting in 1979, Congress officially extended it to a month-long observance in 1990.
May was specifically chosen to honor two significant historical milestones: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was built in large part by Chinese immigrants.
From food festivals to art showcases and baseball-themed giveaways, here’s how you can take part in Kansas City’s 2025 AAPI Heritage Month celebrations:
Taste of AAPI Food & Cultural Festival
Location: West Bottoms (West 14th & Hickory)
Date & Time: Saturday, May 3 | 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Now in its fourth year, the Taste of AAPI Food & Cultural Festival returns as part of the West Bottoms’ First Friday celebration. This free event will feature delicious authentic cuisines from over 20 Asian and Pacific Islander food vendors.
Live performances will include traditional dances from Tahiti, Thailand, the Hmong community, and the Philippines. With over 5,000 attendees in 2024, organizers anticipate even greater turnout this year.
Remembering Saigon: 50 Years Since the Vietnam War
Location: Don Bosco Community Center, 526 Campbell St.
Date & Time: Sunday, May 4 | 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
In partnership with the Vietnamese American Community of Greater Kansas City and Hella Good Deeds, this free public event commemorates the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
The program honors the bravery of Vietnamese soldiers and civilians and reflects on the mass exodus that followed the fall of Saigon in 1975. Many of those refugees made their new homes in the Kansas City region. Visitors can reserve their free spot online.
Kansas City Royals: AAPI Heritage Night
Location: Kauffman Stadium
Date & Time: Wednesday, May 7 | Game starts at 6:40 p.m.
Celebrate AAPI heritage at the ballpark! The Kansas City Royals are hosting Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Night during their game against the Chicago White Sox.
Special themed tickets include a limited-edition AAPI-themed Sluggerrr Bobblehead, available only at Gate A before the end of the second inning.

The Art of Being AANHPI Festival
Location: Zhou B Art Center & 18th and Vine District
Date & Time: Saturday, May 31 | Starting at 10 a.m.
Organized by local Vietnamese café Café Cà Phê, this all-day cultural celebration marks its fifth year and will be held in the historic 18th and Vine District. The event is a tribute to Asian Americans, South Asians, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.
Highlights include:
- A fashion show and live stage performances
- Open studios from resident Zhou B Artists
- A collaborative art wall and indoor AAPI art gallery
- An outdoor market with over 50 local vendors and food trucks
