According to law enforcement, the 31-year-old Hayes was involved in a physical altercation with another person inside a jail cell. During the incident, Hayes reportedly failed to comply with verbal commands from staff and was subsequently placed in a restraint chair.
He was later discovered unresponsive later that evening and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer also addressed the incident in a public statement, emphasizing her administration’s ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and safety within the city’s correctional system.
“While a thorough investigation is still underway, my office is dedicated to transparency and accountability,” said Spencer. “Reforming the jail remains one of my top priorities, and I will continue to support the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s full investigation of this matter.”
