Emporia’s Beloved Surgeon Dr. Timothy Harris Retires After 34 Years Of Service

After more than three decades of saving lives, supporting patients, and helping Emporia grow, Dr. Timothy Harris is officially stepping into retirement.

His journey from being the youngest surgeon in the room to becoming one of the most respected and experienced doctors in the community is a story filled with dedication, hard work, and heart. For the people of Emporia, his retirement marks the end of an important era in local healthcare.

Dr. Harris did not just work in Emporia — he made it his home. From long hospital shifts to building close relationships with patients and staff, his career shows what true commitment looks like.

A Career That Began with Big Dreams

Dr. Timothy Harris grew up in Dodge City, Kansas, and always knew he wanted to help people. He studied at Pittsburg State University, earned his medical degree in Missouri, and completed his surgery training in Tulsa. His path was not simple, but every step prepared him for a lifetime of service.

One major part of his early career was serving in the U.S. Navy. Because the Navy paid for his medical education, he worked as a military doctor after graduation. This experience shaped him both personally and professionally.

Life as a Navy Surgeon

Serving in the Navy took Dr. Timothy Harris across the world. He worked in Florida, served as a surgeon on a ship for a five-ship fleet, and later was stationed in Spain. At one base, he was one of only two surgeons, treating both American service members and local civilians.

Treating Running of the Bulls Injuries

One of his most unforgettable experiences came from treating people injured during the famous Running of the Bulls. Many patients suffered serious leg injuries from bull horns in narrow streets.

These moments were intense, but they helped Dr. Harris grow as a surgeon. Even today, he speaks positively about his time in the military.

Choosing Emporia as Home

After starting a family with three young children, frequent relocations became difficult. Dr. Timothy Harris decided it was time to return to Kansas and settle down.

While flying a patient back to the U.S., he stopped in Emporia for a job interview at Newman Regional Health. On the same day, another local hospital closed, creating chaos. Despite the confusion, Dr. Harris pushed forward — and that decision changed Emporia forever.

He officially began working in the community in 1991.

Building a Practice from Scratch

Starting out was not easy. Dr. Timothy Harris opened an independent practice near 15th Street. Like many new doctors, he had to learn the business side of medicine while also caring for patients.

Technology was still developing, and even basic computer use was new at the time. Building trust in the community took patience. In the early days, he worked hard to look busy while waiting for more patients to arrive.

Moving to Newman Regional Health

In 1996, Dr. Timothy Harris moved his practice into Newman Regional Health’s remodeled campus. From there, his workload increased rapidly.

As a solo general surgeon, he was almost always on call. Many days started at 6 a.m. and ended late at night. Still, he never complained — he loved his work.

For him, learning never stopped.

Relationships That Lasted a Lifetime

What stands out most to Dr. Harris is not the surgeries — it is the people. Many patients visited him regularly for years. Some felt more like family than patients.

Saying goodbye is emotional, but it also shows how deeply connected he became to the community.
