A 20-year-old man from Olathe, identified as Brayden Lee Barnett, was arrested Monday afternoon in Emporia after allegedly riding his motorcycle at extremely high speeds through Lyon County, according to KVOE Radio.
Barnett was ultimately captured by Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) troopers inside a store restroom, after multiple law enforcement agencies were actively searching for him in the area.
Barnett Allegedly Reached 170 mph Approaching Emporia
According to KHP troopers, Barnett admitted to traveling around 170 mph as he neared Emporia. While this exact speed could not be verified due to the distance between his motorcycle and pursuing officers, authorities confirmed he was weaving through traffic and construction zones at dangerously high speeds.
Suspect Tracked to Walmart and Emporia Pavilions
Investigators stated Barnett exited the interstate and went to the Walmart store at 2301 Industrial Road on the northwest side of Emporia.
Security footage reportedly showed him walking through the store, exiting through the back, and heading toward the nearby Emporia Pavilions at W. 24th Avenue and Industrial Road.
Officers later found him inside a bathroom at the Five Below store at 2616 W. 12th Avenue within the Emporia Pavilions complex.
Facing Multiple Traffic and Legal Violations
Barnett was taken into custody on charges of interference with law enforcement and multiple traffic-related violations, including:
Violation | Description |
---|---|
Reckless driving | Operating a vehicle with disregard for safety |
No registration | Motorcycle lacked valid registration |
No motorcycle endorsement | Driver’s license did not include motorcycle class |
No insurance | No proof of active motorcycle insurance |
Troopers initially suspected him of fleeing and eluding, though they later stated this charge would likely be withdrawn.
The arrest of Brayden Lee Barnett highlights the serious dangers of extreme speeding and reckless driving on public roads.
This incident demonstrates how quick coordination between law enforcement agencies and use of security footage can prevent potential tragedies and ensure public safety. Barnett now faces multiple charges that could carry severe legal consequences.
