Built To Bounce Back: Emporia State Hornets Eye Postseason Glory After Last Year’s Final Stretch Collapse

Emporia Hornets Ready to Strike Again

Football season is finally back at Emporia State University (ESU), and the energy is higher than ever. The Hornets have started their 2025 fall camp with one goal in mind — to bounce back from last year’s disappointing finish and make a deeper impact this season.

The team hit the field early, full of energy, discipline, and determination. The practices are fast-paced, the drills intense, and the players seem more focused than ever.

Coach Higgins Wants Work Ethic Over Just Talent

Head coach Garin Higgins has seen many teams in his long career. But this one, he says, could be among the most talented he’s ever coached. Still, he’s not letting that get to the team’s head.

“This is maybe one of the most talented teams I’ve had,” Higgins said. “These guys are talented and competitive, but we haven’t faced any real adversity yet. We’ll have to learn those things as we go.”

Coach Higgins is focused on building a strong team culture where every player works hard, supports teammates, and prepares for tough moments ahead.

Using Last Year’s Losses as Motivation

In 2024, Emporia State had a strong start with seven wins in their first eight games. But the season ended on a sour note when they lost their final three games, which kept them from making the playoffs.

“We have an extra chip on our shoulder this year,” said Jake Tucker, a redshirt sophomore linebacker. “Losing those last couple of games didn’t feel good, and it’s something we can’t let happen again.”

That ending has become fuel for this year’s effort. Players don’t want to repeat the same mistake, and that determination is showing in practice.

New Team Leaders Take the Spotlight

With former leader Tyler Kahmann now trying to earn a spot with the Indianapolis Colts, it’s time for new leaders to step up.

Malik O’Atis, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver, had an outstanding summer training. Now, he’s taking the lead in guiding younger players, especially in the receiver group.

“I just try to be the guy that can bring everyone together,” O’Atis said. “I’m trying to be the type of leader for this group that Tyler was for us.”

Veteran wide receiver Kingley Bennett is also helping by focusing on the small details that make big plays happen.

“Preach the details on focusing on the little things,” Bennett said. “They probably get annoyed at me, but I say learn all the details like their route trees, going through the playbook in the fast-paced offense.

Getting Ready for Contact: Pads Come on Friday

So far, the team has only done non-contact drills, but that’s about to change. On Friday, players will put on their pads and begin full-contact practice.

This is when the coaches really see who is ready — who knows their assignments, who stays calm under pressure, and who can perform physically. These practices will be key in shaping the starting lineup and identifying future stars.

Season Opener Against Minot State on August 28

The excitement is building for the season opener, which will take place at home against Minot State on August 28. Every practice, every rep, and every moment of focus is leading toward that first big test.

The Hornets want to start strong again — but this time, finish even stronger.

A Team With Something to Prove

The Emporia State Hornets aren’t just another team heading into a new season. They’re a group of focused young athletes with unfinished business. They know how last year ended, and they’re using that pain to push themselves harder this time around.

With talented players, rising leaders, and a coach who demands hard work, Emporia State could be in for a breakout year. But nothing is guaranteed. To make it happen, they’ll have to stay united, stay sharp, and give their best every single day — starting now in fall camp.
