Emporia State University President Ken Hush Announces Retirement

Ken Hush, the 18th President of Emporia State University (ESU), has officially announced his retirement, with his final day on campus scheduled for December 17.

Appointed to the role on June 22, 2022, Hush has led the university through significant transformations during a pivotal period in higher education.

A Time of Major Reform and Structural Overhaul

Under Hush’s leadership, Emporia State University underwent bold restructuring efforts that received both commendation and criticism.

His administration terminated several tenured faculty, eliminated certain academic programs, and introduced new offerings in alignment with evolving educational needs.

In November 2022, then Kansas Board of Regents Chair Cheryl Harrison-Lee encouraged a comprehensive evaluation of the state’s higher education system. Emporia State was chosen to “look under the hood” and reimagine how universities could operate more sustainably in the long term.

Shifting Toward a Business-Inspired, Student-Centered Model

President Hush emphasized ESU’s commitment to affordability, access, and student-centered learning. He noted that the university applied business-world strategies to create operational efficiencies and strengthen collaboration.

“For Emporia State to thrive, we had to act boldly and proactively,” Hush stated. “We responded to industry trends and higher education challenges that have persisted for over a decade.”

These challenges included:

  • Declining student enrollment
  • Increased demand for online learning
  • An oversupply of higher education options compared to actual student interest

These issues led to organizational inefficiencies, financial shortfalls, and structural problems across U.S. institutions.

Financial Stabilization and Strategic Investments

During his presidency, Hush guided Emporia State through a $30 million financial correction, successfully eliminating a $19 million budget deficit.

He proudly stated that, “At the same time, we invested millions in our people and our programs. As a result, ESU is now fiscally stable, efficient, and structurally strong.”

Looking Ahead: A Legacy of Leadership and Change

As the search begins for a new ESU president, Hush encouraged the university community to maintain their strong support for its mission. Though he will step down from his role in December, he expressed his commitment to remain an active supporter of ESU’s ongoing progress.

“Serving my alma mater, my hometown, and my home state of Kansas has been an honor,” Hush said. “I’m confident the team we’ve built—each member chosen for their unique strengths—will continue to guide ESU forward in the best interest of students and taxpayers alike.”

Ken Hush’s tenure as Emporia State University President was marked by ambitious change, financial turnaround, and a shift toward modern education models.

As he prepares for retirement, his legacy will likely be remembered for guiding ESU through challenging but necessary reforms to secure a sustainable and student-focused future.
