Emporia State University (ESU) is preparing to connect directly with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), marking a groundbreaking educational milestone.
The university announced that it is one of only four institutions selected for this exclusive opportunity, which will allow students and the local community to communicate live with astronauts in orbit.
A Giant Leap for ESU and Its Students
“This is a thrilling moment for our campus,” shared Erika Martin, associate professor in the School of Science and Mathematics. “We are over the moon about this opportunity to engage our community directly with astronauts orbiting Earth, while learning more about amateur radio and space science.”
Martin, alongside a dedicated team that includes STEM Outreach Director Daphne Mayes, Peterson Planetarium Director Mark Brown, and PAROC Outreach and Engagement Coordinator Alexandra Hayes, played a pivotal role in securing this once-in-a-lifetime event for ESU.
Powered by the ARISS Program
This opportunity is made possible through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) initiative — a program designed to inspire interest in STEM, promote satellite communication, and foster a passion for space exploration.
Through this collaboration, students and community members will not only witness a live connection with the ISS but also participate in hands-on educational experiences related to radio technology and science communication.
Community Involvement and Upcoming Events
In preparation for the ISS contact event, Emporia State University plans to partner with local schools, organizations, and businesses to host a series of STEM-based activities and workshops.
These events aim to boost scientific curiosity among students and highlight the importance of space education in the modern world.
Although the exact date of the ISS contact and related events has not yet been finalized, ESU has confirmed that further updates will be available on its official university website as details are finalized.
Emporia State University’s inclusion in the ARISS program represents a major achievement for both its faculty and students, bridging the gap between Earth and space.
By connecting directly with astronauts aboard the ISS, ESU is fostering a new generation of learners passionate about STEM education, space exploration, and scientific innovation.
This initiative not only elevates the university’s academic profile but also strengthens its role in promoting hands-on learning and community engagement through science.
