In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, the Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) women’s basketball team clinched the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) championship, earning their place in the NAIA National Tournament.
This victory is particularly significant given the challenges faced by the team in recent weeks.
Just thirteen days prior to the championship game, Head Coach Adam Strom was among numerous federal employees laid off.
Despite this setback, Coach Strom chose to remain with his team, exemplifying unwavering commitment. His dedication resonated deeply with the players and their families.
“It means a lot to the kids,” remarked Bonie Hubbard, a parent. “I know they were really upset hearing the news. It’s just a great feeling that he wants to finish with the team.”
Championship Game Highlights: Haskell’s Road to Victory
On March 2, 2025, Haskell faced the top-seeded Northern New Mexico College in the CAC championship at the Coffin Sports Complex. The game was a testament to Haskell’s tenacity:
- First Quarter: Haskell started strong, with senior guard Mahpiya Irving leading the offense. However, Northern New Mexico capitalized on key opportunities, ending the quarter ahead 17-10.
- Second and Third Quarters: Haskell rallied, with junior Tierzah Penn driving to the basket and sinking a pivotal three-pointer. The teams were neck and neck, entering the final quarter with Northern New Mexico holding a slim 41-38 lead.
- Fourth Quarter: Haskell unleashed a 10-point run, seizing control of the game. Sophomore Tea Murray made crucial plays in the paint, propelling Haskell to a 50-44 advantage. Despite Northern New Mexico’s late efforts, Haskell secured a 57-52 victory.
Coach Strom’s Reflection
Post-game, Coach Strom expressed profound emotion:
“I haven’t found myself since the unfortunate circumstance, but I knew where I wanted to be – and this is where I wanted to be. Not for me, or Coach Smith, but for those ladies right there.”
Player Reactions
The team’s elation was palpable:
- Myona Dauphinais: “During our whole season, we’ve faced adversity and we were at our best right here.”
- Tea Murray: “It feels good. I can’t believe it.”
- Mahpiya Irving: “Our season’s not over yet; we get to keep going.”
